Door knocking
« on: June 16, 2009, 08:53:07 am »
Hi all,

I'll be honest it is EXTREMELY quiet at the moment so I need to explore new avenues of obtaining work. So much so I was wondering how many of you door knock? I was thinking that after a job I would knock on their neighbour's doors, introduce myself, say I have just done some work for your neighbour and was wondring if there is anything I could do for you?

This is something I can't say I am looking forward to doing but needs must! Failing that I am going to start posting neighbour nudgers through their letterboxes. How many of you do that and whats your response rates like?

I'd appreciate your thoughts please?

TIA
John

The neighbour nudging with leaflets is a good idea and the amount of times I actually get disturbed during a job by a neighbour requesting a leaflet isn't a rare occurence. I would maybe post them before you start the job to give the prospect the chance to come to you.

I'm a big hater of door knockers which is a shame really, because it prevents me from doing it myself :-[ I'm missing out on a trick probably!!!

John, just do it. If you haven't got a job to go to today then do it this morning. We all know it's not the most pleasant method, but you will get a better return than leaflets.

I find if you wait to 'feel up to it' you never get around to it. Once you have done it you feel much better with a few jobs booked in, beats waiting around for answers on a forum. ;)

Sit down with last years diary and ring your old customers starting 18 months since working down to 12 months, bet you get a few jobs, has always worked for me in the past. Tell them you increased your prices in april this year, but as an old customer you will honour the previous price paid.

I'm exactly the same. I hate door knockers and feel its an invasion of my privacy! I will always say a direct no thinks and close the door, regardless of what they are selling.

However because of my hatred of people knocking on my door I do not like to impose myself knocking on others.

Hi Guys,

When I first started we went door knocking every evening, before rewarding ourselves with a couple of beers.

Like most I hated it, when recession of early 90's struck I couldnt bear doing it again but decided to cold call commercial, worked well and I have still have a couple of the customers.

Businesses are used to receiving salesmen, put on some smart clothes, suit probably too smart and give it a try.

Cheers

Doug

I door knocked last week, and got $600.00 worth of work in about an hour and half. All commercial properties.plus got the bosses houses.
It's deffinately worth it.
just walk in and say hi I'm martin from carpetworx i was just wondering if you would like your carpet or tiles cleaned?. there usually filthy and the receptionist really wants them cleaned, so she's on your side.
Just say 'I'll give you a quick quote if you like'.If you get this far, your quids in.
always wear your uniform, and park your van where they can see it.I even take them outside and show them my equipment and go through how i'm going to make there carpet look like new again.
You will get some that say,'oh our cleaning co. takes care of all that'.
Just explain to them that cleaning contractors simply don't have the expertise or the right equipment to do the job properly and you really need a certified technician that is properly insured for that job.
Most people don't know this but insurance companies will not pay up if you use someone that is not certified, it's all in the small print.
Hope this helps,so just get out there and do it. 8)

I donot know if they stillreccomend it but it was one of the Strategies Ashbys reccopmended on their Marketing Course.

For a FAST START

You put out leaflet day before saying you will be in the Area  the next day between

$pm and 6pm  giving qoutes for Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning

You may need this weeks special offer  or PHONE THE BOSS to close deal;

Everest Windows was built on the KnOCK

The Story of The Door.

The door keeps you out of most houses . it isusually closed to you. will not know what is on the other side untill you go through it.

Getting through the Door  You Could Try
Cleaning 200 square feet of Carpet in return for giving a qoute on the rest of the house

Or if that is to much a Free Hallway.

You could buy 200 promotional bottles ofspotter from Alltec, Cleansmart or Restormate.

Give them away in return for qouting on one or two rooms

You

The Great One

Hi

Hate door knocking too.

One technique is to have some leaflets to hand and then you can ask if they have had it through their door?

This gives you a lead line and then you can move on to maybe quoting, give them a leaflet personally, this way you don't do 2 trips (leafleting + knocking).

How long does it take to knock on 1,000 peoples doors looking
For work? What would a canvasser charge to do it? On average
How much work would that pull in?

I'm seriously thinking of doing the 'Free Room Clean' in some very hard to get into neighbourhoods just to get a foothold which I find is the problem.

Hi Mike
What is a "hard to get into area" for you?

Is the "free room clean" you do a room and walk away even if they dont go for more
or is it "clean 3 rooms get 1 free" ie the smallest.?

Hi Joe

It's 'free' and walk away. In theory, but I'm banking on some reciprocity. The key thing is for them to meet me because they don't really know me from Adam. It's fairly upmarket and let's face it the really choice places already have a carpet cleaner entrenched.

I was thinking of doing a RM mailshot but it gets done to death by the FS boys.
