get the customer to supply a piece of wood 2ft square and at one edge screw/nail in a section of 2 x x2 put some nails thru  the four corners of the square wood to act as grips so when the the wood is placed down the nails sink into the soil and you place your ladders against the 2 x 2

get the correct tool for the job, wood is not suitable for a ladder stop or they would be made out of it it slips (think decking when wet)  :

but it wont slip ?
the 2x 2 is the stopper the nails grip into the grass holding the base in place
i think the only problem with having a equipment like this is that depending on your round its not always easy to carry everything if your walking the round so having various equipment placed at the custys house saves time
