RO versus DI system
« on: May 04, 2009, 12:22:44 pm »
as I have said before I am in the process of setting up a WFP round. Having spent some considerable time researching the various suppliers and thier products one question keeps coming back to me.
Basically RO systems appear to br 30 to 40% more expensive han a DI system initally but cost next to nothing to run.
However how much water do they waste during the purification process and does the length of the process serveral houes as opposed to 20 minutes .
I understand that the systems are ment to deal with different types of water hardnes but my home tapwater TDS is only 115 I just wondered which system would be the most cost effective and why?

thanks in advance for your help

Waste for an R/O can be anything from 3 parts waste to 1  part pure to 50/50 and above.

The 4040 R/O's are the most efficient and fastest producing ones, the RO man ones, (200 gal per day and so on) are the slowest, but to be honest, they are more than fast enough (even though the waste to pure is 3:1) for a one man or even 2 man outfit, especially if you are just starting to build your round.

I used one for 4 years and the last couple of years I have been keeping 3 of us in water without to many problems.

If your water is  0.115 ppm then you will most certainly need an R/O system of some kind, a DI just won't be cost effective over the long run...

i live in a soft water area tds is 78 i use a ro system bought brand new in october last year well impressed with it dont need any new fiters or resin yet. Before that i used a di system and replaced the resin about every 4 week at a cost of £78 quid a time to me ro is best by far! :D
