Not doing any extras anymore.
« on: April 30, 2009, 01:48:50 am »

Last time I did one of my customers, I thought I'd go the extra mile, and clean the edge of the conservatory, where the glass meets the gutter, was all green, and had a bit of extra time, so I thought why not ey?

Customer (wife) was really pleased.

Got the cheque in the post today, and I kid you not this was what was on a note attached to it, written by her husband! :

xxxxx,

Could you please pay a bit more attention to the conservatory roof next time. Thanks

(^ just like that, no question mark)

lol, lesson learned.  ::)  ::)  :-\  >:(

If ever I do anything extra I always make a fuss about it so they know it's extra, just this once kind of thing.
Mate of mine did an OAP's house and she got him indoors taking down her nets and cleaning several indoor windows for no extra. The next time he said no and stood his ground, otherwise the job just grows and grows

Been there! Do a favour once and it soon becomes the norm.

I learned that lesson when I used to do the gardening. Its the worst job in the world for people saying  "Could you just do this......"

I did an extra for an old lady yesterday that could hardly walk, I was cleaning the out side and con roof  and she was following cleaning the insides, I then see her get a step ladder and start to put it up, never have I moved so fast, I would rather do this free than live with the knowledge she had fallen, she did offer to pay £5 extra for it but i refused she did make a cheese and tomato sandwich and forced me to eat it  ;D

Had a good customer ask me to do a little bit of extra woodwork above a couple of windows...he asked for a price..now this chap pays on time, talks to me like I am a human being...so I said I would do...and he could pay me what he thought it was worth me to do it...I did it and he gave me 5 euro's...which I think was fair for both him and I....

But in general very few people appreciate free...

Dave.

DO any of you get asked to "quickly" do the kitchen window inside?

Im always asked to do it - ive since stopped taking my trad gear incl my ladder out with me, and say i no longer do trad work unless its specifically booked in.

...and kitchen windows inside are generally the worst to clean.

I still do extras but I now charge as I was finding that if you do it once for free it suddenly becomes part of the job. "Oh Simon you're not doing the insides of the patio doors?...you used to!"  The fact that I did them last time round as a favour seemed to have escaped him. ::)
