6 month filter change???
« on: April 28, 2009, 07:12:11 pm »
I have my RO System consistently pumping out at 003PM, through DI down to 000.
I have not changed the three filters fot 10 months, and dont intend to if Im producing totally pure water. The filters according to the manuals and on the casings say you must change after 6 months. why? Is this there expected lifespan?

Im gonna carry on as I cant see the point in changing them for the sake of it, unless any of you think there is a bloody good reason to change filters at the prescibed 6 monthly intervals.

Thought experiences please?

Just changed mine five minutes ago. My water is fairly hard so I change mine spot on every six months. My TDS has crept up from its normal 6ppm to 18ppm so if my filters don't bring it down then I might be looking at membranes. Just used the last of my resin too as it was just starting to creep up after di.
I would think saving money on your filters might be false economy in the long run as they would protect the membranes?

Why oh why do some people ignore the info they are given with goods?

The prefilters are there to PROTECT THE MEMBRANES and if you exceed the time period for changing them you WILL end up with ruined membranes. The charcoal filters are there to take chlorine which destroys membranes out of the water.

A decent set of prefilters is cheap.

i ignore the info given by ro manufactures cos i dont believe it every 6  months?? dont think so
why do you think they say every 6 months?? they want to sell more filters

i change mine when tds goes up, thats when you need to change them simple.

pre filters dont really filter much, its the membrains that do all the filtering.

pre filters protect the membranes..as D B Services  pointed out already

put it this way,

why have a fuel filter in your car? to protect the injectors and valves.. its not to better your fuel calorific value.   ;)

the charcoal filter is the important 1, as it stops the clorine getting to the membrane and that prolongs the life, the cloth filter just breaks down and slows the flow down

so change the charcoal filter if you dont want to change the rest

I would like to hear from one of the suppliers on this topic.
I do too think that the 6 monthly replacement thing is a try on to sell the filters, and I cant see how the membranes can get that damaged by chlorine in such a short space of time.
If you adhered to manufacturers guidelines you'd spend all of sunday checking your tyre pressures, topping up your oil, water, screenwash, and measuring tyre tread depths. Sado's only department.

I changed my 10inch filters every month or so, at about £3 for 2 different filters I could not see the harm.

Now have 20inch and will change them every three or 4 months, my membrane is the life blood of my wfp side of business and I intend to protect it even if I could squeeze a month or three out of them, for the pennies they cost it it really worth the risk :-\

i run a RO into the ground, i got 3 years out of it ( if my memory serves me right ), didnt change a thing, it was only a small 60 GPD unit though, but the process of production is the same
