Is my RO working right ?
« on: April 04, 2009, 11:18:43 am »
Hi all,

Have bought the 75GPD proffessional 4 Stage RO from RO-MAN. It is all set up and running with a TDS reading of 0 which is spot on!

The gauge is reading 31 lb/in which also reads 2.25 kg/cm2

Its working, but seems a little slow to me.

How does this sound to you guys ?

Who knows. The only figure that makes sense is how long it takes to produce a litre.
Do some maths and work out how much it would produce over 24 hours. It won't be as good as it says on the box though.

A 75 gpd unit will be slow.

Yes very slow. About 5 minutes to produce 1 litre.

Have got it running straight into my backpack at the moment. Looks like its done 6 litres in an hour  :-\

Is there a way of speeding this up at all ? booster pump maybe ? or have i gone out and bought a toss RO ?

The maths work out at...

6L Per Hour
which works out at
144L Per 24 Hours

The RO is a 75 US gallons per day unit which works out at 288L per day. If my maths are correct its running at half speed.

That sounda about right.
It is a mickey mouse ro really and you should soon outgrow it. I think matt uses a similar ro.
It will need a booster for sure. That will almost double the production but not quite.
You will be able to upgrade by adding another membrane maybe. But this size RO for someone making a living using pure water is like a painter going out and buying toothbrushes to paint a house.
It will do the job but will take forever.

Leave it running all the time; it'll produce more than enough water for a backpack; I'm sure.

What booster would i need to up the production and where could i get it from ?

tosh ~ Im going to be running a WCW backpack with 2 25L containers on a trolley. Think i will have to invest in some more 25L containers though

75GPD only works with high tap pressure and warm water going in,.. in reality RO's very rarely reach their rated output.

Would warm water damage the RO unit if i changed it over to the hot pipe ?

I know i sound like a messenger of doom.
But for you to make this work as smoothly in the long term, your best bet is contacting your supplier and asking if you can give it back and get a bigger one. Unless you trad downstairs and use wfp for upstairs only you are only gonna get a a couple of hours worth of the water this RO will produce.

Apart from swapping for a bigger RO you only have 2 other options:

1. Get a booster pump and your RO will produce enough water for 1/2 a day.

2. Upgrade the RO by adding more membranes.

You have NO other options. None.

JP,

Get yourself two 210 litre water butts; stick them on some sort of platform; (I made one out of some lengths of 2" x 2" wood and an old door) and stick the water butts on top.

Just let your RO discharge the pure water into the water butts.

I doubt you'll use more than 150 litres per day.

You'll need about 6 x 25 litre barrels.

Before you go spending on anything else; do the above; it'll work.

I started with a Ro-Man 100gpd unit,.. it actually produced only about 200 litres a day,.. maybe a little more in warm weather. I had it running 24 hours a day, normally 5 or 6 days a week filling a 1000 litre tank in my shed. It kept up with my needs until the xmas rush,.. I needed to get 1 fill from my dad's tank to tide me over,.. but other than that it did the job. Now I use a Merlin which is 720 GPD, and its only switched on 2 or 3 times a week for no more than 12 hours at a time,.. but it's very handy to have the extra capacity if i need it,.. If I have a helper for a week for example.

Do what Tosh says and set it up filling water buts or an IBC or something and leave it running 24/7. Adding an extra membrane will double the output for £50 or so. 6 or 8 months from now when you are earning, then invest in something more substantial.
