TomTom Sat Nav
« on: April 10, 2005, 01:06:19 pm »
I've been thinking of getting Sat Nav, not that I really need it it get around my round, but I guess it will at least be tax deductable ;)

I'm told that TomTom is a good one, but you can also get the ones that are also fully usable palmtops, I kinda like that idea as I could then get and use Pocket George....I think! ???

Anyone got any input on that subject?

A dedicated Sat Nav setup like TomTom, or the palmtop route??

Also, I've been trying to find a site that you can download maps for Europe for TomTom and other Sat Nav software.

Can find sites to buy the software from, but I want to be able to DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE!!
Can't find links for that anyware >:(

Anyone know where I can find such a link, or know of a site?

TomTom will run on dedicated GPS systems and plam's

if you mean you want to Download it for free, your out of luck, as its GPS you need a key and you buy the key when you buy the software

Was really talking about the complete TomTom unit, approx £450, compared for instance to the Psion units that are also palmtop computers.

Downloading stuff for nowt ain't a problem, the likes of WinMx, Shareaza, Limewire have loads of stuff with hacked codes, You can get programs worth hundreds of pounds, you can also get a nicely bundled virus with the package too ;D

Want a top of the range photo editing program, no problem, search any of the file sharing sites, its amazing what you can find, these things don't just share music files and porn.
I digress, where the maps are concerned, there are supposed to be sites you can go to and download (with payment!) maps or routes for the area of Europe you may wish to go to, as against going to a shop and buying a full package for £140 or so.
Not something you want to do if you are going on holiday for instance and hiring a car, you don't want instructions for Italy if you are only going to visit Majorca.

So a site to go and download from anyone?

Roy,
What kind of system do you need to run pocket george then?

Hi you need a palm with palm operating system 3 or higher. If you look on ebay and type in zire palm there are several listed, black and white also colour, the colour one has a back light display which makes it easy to read.

Cleaning windows in Europe?.....We are IN Europe aren't we? ;)

A Sat Nav is still going to be tax deductable, it's a motoring expense afterall.

Going to the latest window cleaning trade show? What could be more useful than Sat Nav.
You may not need it to find your way around your regular round of course, but it will make finding that potential new customer's house, the one that stopped you in the street and asked for a quote!
And so on and so forth.

Unfortunately that holds no water with my missus, she knows full well it's just me wanting a new toy :-\

I know the TomTom works well, a mate has it and finds it invaluable in his light haulage business.
But I would like to know how well the palm top ones work too, are they as good? I might be able to swing that one cos I can also purchase the pocket george to go on it, and that one is a very justifiable expense.

Gaza,
Very much English and proud of it ;D Was using the European angle to be pedantic ;)
Now if only we had a section on the forum we could go onto to discuss nationality issues/Brussels and the fact that on the census a year or 2 ago I couldn't put, when asked, the fact that I considered my nationality to be English, not british (though I am). Were I Welsh, Scottish or Irish it wouldn't have been a problem.
It really p*ssed me off >:(
