Membrane flushing
« on: March 25, 2009, 10:45:48 pm »
I need to flush my membrane once a week for atleast 4 hours according to the manufacturer. I was wondering whether I could do it directly from the mains or if I should go through the sediment filter first. I don't really want to clogg the sediment filter when not producing pure water.

Forgive me for being a bit naive, but the 4 hours a week came from BRODEX. Shall I just do it as you've mentioned?

I flush for about 20 mins, after filling 2x 1000l ibc's and 650l all goes through prefilters as I prefer to protect the membrane I would not say by pass this

Brodex are trying to protect there membranes from being returned if damaged if you ask me,the time you`ve finished flushing it you might have time to make a bit of water. ;D

Seems a bit over the top I know. I think I'll change the way I do it from now on. Thanks everyone!

There is no standard amount of time for flushing membrane as it varies according to water quality, pressure and temperature. In some cases 4 hours may be a little over the top, but the biggest cause of membrane failure is them becoming clogged or blocked.

Flushing dramatically improves their life and performance.

We are the only company to guarantee our membranes (any other company would just insist on selling you a new one), so obviously we want to protect them, but this is for your benefit too.

I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s not in your best interest to just continually degrade your performance, and slow down your production, until you’ve flogged your membrane to death… and then claim on our warranty.

Don't take out the prefilters and run water thru the system, ever. It will ruin your membrane

I flush my twin 40x40 before every fill for 20-30min. it must go through the pre filters first. I also salt backwash before every fill.

20-30 minutes before each fill is not needed that`s crazy, look at the waste water you can see when it`s flushed. When the membrane hasn`t been flushed for a while the water looks like it`s got Aspro clear in it ie milky, after 5-10 minutes the water clears ready to make water.

That may be true, but the membranes are a year old and still prduce very fast at 002 ppm, which is why i stick to what works for me.

When flushing 40-40 do you just open the waste valve fully and let it run through?

Yes

I put it on flush for 5 mins before every fill (350l), that's pretty much it. (300GPD)

When i fully open the waste valve on my 4040 it still produces some pure at the same time. Is this normal?
