Am I too suspicious ?
« on: March 25, 2009, 06:24:27 pm »
I had a call yesterday asking to quote in and out of a two bed house over the phone.
I answered as I always do, that I cant give an accurate price without first seeing but i am happy to arrange a time to visit for a free no obligation quote. "ok thanks anyway, I might call you back" was the reply.
Now, I thought nothing of it until I put the phone down, but the tone of his voice and the manner in which he asked had me thinking there was more to this. that maybe it was another window cleaner  fishing for prices or someone who had even seen me working an area.
Sure, I could just be being paranoid, I'm not even that bothered as I gave nothing away and experience has taught me too many times now that you dont quote without first seeing.
Have any of you had similar experiences, or reasons to be suspicious etc. ?

I had a call once from a guy asking me how much I would charge for a house in a certain street.
As it happened, not only was this house already a customer, but I was standing right outside as it was my next job. The customer was a lady living on her own and knew nothing about it.
How's that for coincidence?

i agree in theory with all above comments !

however ,

i do quote over the phone , as my round is fairly local and compact ,so , if i know the road , probably already have customers in that road , then i quote ( i dont count windows ) .
some roads i need to look at first , and of course all commercial  .

Yep me too. If I know the road and already have customers in it I'll happily quote over the phone as the houses will be much the same....there's always a bit of "ish" in it in case they've got a conservatory at the back or EOT side windows etc.

ive had this happen, and i quizzed him until finally he revealed he was in fact a wc, he was so persistent, he wanted me to send him "a list of your prices". TBH i think he had a screw loose!
