What is the correct way to set dress a pile on a carpet.

I use a pile brush in two directions, across the room and then up/down the room.

Hi Ian, Already it shows you have caused confusion  as to what you mean by the word DRESS. To the tailor and the carpet restorer the word implies the same thing but about differant things? PREFERENCE, which way does it go naturaly, we would talk about the nap, the sweep or the lay of the pile, so on a 90 line super washed Chinese rug we would dress it to recreate the lustre by using a towel to smooth the pile in one direction.

For me, there are two ways to dress/groom/lay the pile.  The usual way is to groom in the direction of the pile. This would typically be towards the busiest door. However, there has always been a valid discussion that grooming against the pile will leave it open and lifted which should assist drying. The drawback with this is that, when opened to traffic, foot marks will be more obvious and pronounced.

The direction in which I dress the pile will be dependant on a number of factors.

Often it will be against the lay of pile, not only to assist with drying but to introduce more 'spring'. Kens point about footprints is valid but overall benefits may outweigh this.

On a polypropylene bedroom carpet however, this approach will often result in the trafficked areas looking like an old towel compared to the 'fluffy' corners.

The deciding factor, therefore is often a balance of what gives an acceptable appearance and what benefits the overall condition of the carpet.

use the daddy groomer but go with the pile. and give it a little spray of something that smells nice . ashbys do one

The spray I think you are referring to is Ashbys finish. It smells of peach and jasmine (goes down well with old ladies!). It also rates around 3.5 on the PH scale so is good if not using m/s and have used an alkaline detergent in the machine.

thats right ashbys finish, maybe i should look at the safety data and chemical findings thanks
