GROUTING JOBS AFTER CLEANING?
« on: March 03, 2009, 09:34:12 pm »
Priced a few jobs this week and 2 of them are york stone flagged area with quite wide joints that are in a bad state.I`m going to blow the joints out but i need to know the best way to re-point them. Can i dry grout them or will i have to wet grout them with pointing trowel. If i brush a dry grout in will i mark the flags?I can get a mate in to do it but wondered if you fellas did it yourself to get the extra money.I think things are looking bright for this year despite all the doom and gloom,my ad only went in monday and i`ve priced 7 and booked in 4,didn`t think it would start till weather got better, only small one like but they all add up.Good luck everyone.Dan

Try pave fix or similar. Travis perkins sell it it's about £17 for 2 vav sealed packs in a tub. Just brush in with a sweeping brush dries hard and is very good
I'm always in the poo, it's just the depth that varies

Can`t tell you that mate,i`m the only one in this certain publication and would hate any competition,ha ha.Just kiddin, your local free business mag is the best bet.Make sure they circulate in thousands,at least 5,ask if they go through doors as well as into businesses, and ask for a 6 month deal to take you through till September.Going to start with the stuff recomended on here, sounds easy, most custys especially pensioners won`t point themselves and theres a wage in there.

Hi

The only proper way to re-point paving slabs is to have a 6 to 1 mix sand and cement and use a pointing tool or piece of copper pipe bent at the end to push the dry mixture into the joints. As long as the mix is dry it wont stain the slabs but the important thing is to make sure the mixture is packed hard into the gaps so that it is strong enough when set. If you just brush it in it will be weak and wont last long. If you can push your finger in then it is not packed in hard enough. Rember to finish with a pointing tool and brush away any left over

Good Luck

Justin

Do you use your dry kiln sand or cheap normal sand? Can you use this method on jobs were the joints are very tight and use something sharper to pack it down? Thanks dan

Hi

I come from a grounds maintenance background and so I use cheap yellow builders sand as it is the cement that does the work. You could probably use kiln dried sand and should really use a mixture of builders sand and sharp sand. The sharp sand around here is far to gritty so just builders for me.  If you have tight spaces you should be able to use the same method and pack it in with the edge of a pointing trowle.
