 thinking of putting down vinyl flooring  and sealing with silicone instead of protektakote - what do you guys think?

I wouldn't you'll still get water under it, and it will get torn and damaged. Protectakote would be a far better option.

Bad idea, dont scrimp on the things that could save you money in the long run.

I've done that with my latest van.
Actually ended up costing less in time but more in money.
I did it because when I bought this van it was so nicely ply lined I didn't like the idea of just ripping it out and protectakote, so I've given the Vinyl liner a try.
So far so good.  Bone dry undrneath despite a couple of totally flooded moments. 
Now 8 months and I still have the option to protectakote if I want.
