Caravan as a business expence
« on: February 12, 2009, 07:26:15 pm »
Hi guys,

I do a fair amount of work in north wales and I also have a caravan there,

I live in Stoke which is approx 80 mile from my van and at some points stoke is around 130 mile from my furthest wales work.

Many times during the summer and even in the winter I have stayed there overnight and worked from there.

Very obviously I cant claim the full expence of running the caravan but can I claim for anything at all for accomodation?

Most of the work is commercial so I would have invoices and official sign off sheets to prove the dates that I was there.

I darent ask my accountant incase he laughs at me,

All that im thinking is when we stay away elsewhere for work reasons I obviously claim all of my expences,

I know it sounds petty but Ive been hit by a decent size tax bill this year and it all adds up.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Dean, you working Barmouth by any chance? I met a guy from Stoke there once, he had a van on Cae Daniel.
You would be able to claim if you were staying somewhere B&B, and for subsistance.
If you are doing guest houses or hotels, maybe one of them could put you up and give you a receipt. 8)
Think about it.

Are you a little girl or what?  Ask him!  Of course you'll be to claim something for it; but obviously only a fraction of the cost of the whole; depending on useage.

the other option might be to include your caravan into the biz , so your costs would be offset against your tax , of course any income from renting it out would have to be taxed ( though it should anyway ) if family and friends use it, you could charge them a token fee ( which would mean you will earn a few quid from it )

ask your accountant about that

Well if an MP can claim for his flat in Mayfair.

Dean,

I'll help out, tell me the cost per day. of your static caravan location.  I've a caravan, so I know a little bit about site fees and stuff.  Is it static or is it stored?

Just give me a daily figure.  No don't; let's assume it's £15 per day.  If you do ten days work from your caravan; and that's WORK not mixed with pleasure, then you should be able to claim £15 x 10 days = £150, plus travel costs as an honest basic claim.

I reckon you can't claim for food but could claim for Personal Individual Expenditure (PIE) which many companies pay their employees when they're made to work away from home (including the Army).

This is to cover the extra expenditure you incur for working away from home; such as extra laundry costs; the cost of an extra newspaper (because your Missis will be buying one while you're away; so that's two newspapers) and the cost of a phone call home.  I reckon that's worth about £3 per night.  This is probably dodgy ground, but arguable if you're ever investigated.

You might be to claim for food; thinking about it; you've got to speak to your accountant!

I spend months on end at various camp sites around the country.

Just come back from Chew Valley - near Bath.

All site fees and food costs while I am away go to my accountant.

im in my caravan now enjoying a glass of wine by the seaside.

I've got  meet up with a friend who cleans up this way tomorrow to discuss some tenders.

even though im here for a routine weekend away with the family, would it be pushing it claiming?

id think it was personally.

any more much welcomed thoughts?

thanks in advance

if you think your pushing it dont, you will ask for trouble and a lot of hassle ask your accountant, what you can claim and what you cant be honest and you will save yourself a lot of hassle, you can claim for expenses staying away from home to work this includes some food, I dont know the ins and outs but your accountant should, if he doesnt change accountant.
