I too had this dilema, but could find no reason to register my business name.
It doesn't stop anyone else useing your name, and what difference does it make if they are as long as thay are not operating in the areas that you are, unless of course you are going to go national.
I am sure someone will corect me if I am wrong.

Id consider changing my company name then... easily confused over companies, dont matter who had it first, be original and unique.

Im not sure, so i could be wrong but you would need to be a ltd comapny to register your company name with companies house..  so that will be a lot more expensive if your just a sole trader or partnership with your accountant and returns..

google companies house to find out..

section 6 is what you may want :D

some companies only let you tender if you are registered,  you can pay yourself £84 a week so you dont get taxed.
no other company can use your business name. you can tell ppl your a Managing Director  :P

look on the companies house website

I have really looked into this and the only way to protect your name is to pay a fortune and register it as a trade mark. if anyone should set themselves up as a business with same name as your chosen one, you may have a case if you can prove that the date you registered with the revenue was before theirs but you may find that will cost you time and money doing it the long way so, as far as i am aware the only thing you can do is to register as a trade mark
(roughly £500 quid) to protect yourself. This is what i found out from companys house website, but would suggest you ask someone from business link for more suggestions.

Good link and well worth looking at.

We went ltd a couple of years ago, firstly to protect the name but also for the tax benefits and the personal security should anything happen to the business.

I think on the whole it has been a good move, I find that the business is better percieved by clients if it has a ltd status.
