anyone use a 4 wheel drive for work? any recommendations? a lot of my round is in rural areas where the roads are never gritted, and i don't feel safe sliding around.  and then theres the frequent flooding between this town and the villages too..

I have often thought about the 4x4 pickup.Because of the same reasons you have stated. You can get a cover that goes over the back as well.

I have a ford ranger crew cab with a truckman top. I've a 650 custom tanknand 2 reels in the back. They are great for this weather but there isn't any space for poles, they have to go on the roof. Not very good on fuel either.

I used to use a Toyota Hilux double cab but as Sherwoods said not much room for stuff awkward to to get stuff in and out because you have to climb into it, used to put poles on roofrack, great tool if there are more than 2 of you if not a van is far better.
A bad days fishing is better than a good days work !

thanks for the replies, I hadn't actually considered a pick up, can they double up as an everyday car if the covers are fitted?

Gonna get another Vauxhall Frontera, not the greatest 4x4 for the purest in reality, but running costs are good, good on fuel if you get the diesel. Can carry all my WFP equipment and trad gear. Doubles up as the family motor, as im sick of having cars and a van to pay out for.
You can get them cheap, and the one I had before was reliable and comfortable.
Did consider Shogun or Ranger but for value for money the Vauxhall sticks out as the bargain.

Alot of my friends are farriers and it was a trend for them a while ago to all have 4x4s. They all now have Vitos or VWs etc as they have to carry anvil, shoes,a forge etc etc and a 4x4 doesn't carry as much. They all shoe horses in muddy fields etc and have no need for 4wd.

I'd wondered about a frontera too john, heard they're unreliable but maybe thats not the case, as you say they seem nice and cheap to buy anyway.

I heard that too before I bought it with some reservations  and I think in 3 years the only thing that went
was the headlight control. £300 to replace mind.
I suppose you either get lucky or not with second hand vehicles whatever you buy.
Get the later 2001-2003 model; if you can as most of the probs had been sorted out from the earlier models by these years. So I am informed. And then they stop making them, typical motor industry logic.

You can get one of these tanks

http://www.windowcleaningwarehouse.co.uk/shop/index.php/vmchk/Tanks/Skid-Tank/Detailed-product-flyer.html

Or you can get a small tank of normal one that fits in every days vans. The above would fit even if you have a truckman top on as its higher.

But Mr G'd work is only traditional so there will be plenty of room for him. And even if he moved over to wfp as long as you have a rack - with a custom pipe on the roof rack you can place the poles in there... and secure.

I actually use a trolley system. And find the l200 warrior double cab with leather DVD SAT NAV 03 model a treat as I have a lot of country stuff and I dont ned the 2 inch lift. Ifyou need that in this country then ou are climbing mountains.. look on youtube what the pickups can do and its amazing off road.

I have also an l200 4life with top. blue & silver not leather.. which later on in a month or so I will be selling on an 02

Fuel is appauling but it ways nearly 2 ton, has a turbo. 4 wheel drive,  What do you expect. And they make good family cars as well and the black ones look great...with chrome.

There not that fast thou. only 113bhp but you can get a power upgrade from mitsubishi for £600 takes it to 136bhp.
