« on: February 03, 2009, 07:21:21 am »
yet again this country has over reacted , i live in the thamesvalley and yes we have had a lot of snow, well we did yesterday but the roads were reasonable by lunchtime and are fine today but the local authority listened to the forecast of 12 inches of snow  have given the bin men the day off and closed all the schools, madness. and yes the forcasters got it wrong again

Knew a Norwegian girl once, who couldn't believe what a mess we get in when it snowed.  :o

I saw a person from Boston, USA on the news this morning who was surprised everything had come to a standstill for the amount of snow we had.   ::)

I think we are now becoming a laughing stock round the world because we are not prepared...  >:(

Haha yea, when i lived in Germany we would have 3ft snowfalls. The ploughs would come out n it would be biz as usual the next day. The UK is in chaos at the slightest sign of inclement weather!
It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow.

A couple of years back our Canadian cousins were laughing at us because the snow which was all of 2 inches had brought the country to a standstill it made the news there
They had just had 6 ft yes 6ft and life just went on as normal but they are more set up for that kind of weather as it happens every year and is like that for 6 months of the year they have big snow blowers and the like they even have winter tyres with snow chains and thats the city folk

Gritters are always out in my area, but the roads are still covered in snow, even the main routes are snow covered.

Still i just walked my missus to work, took an hour there and 1.5 hours to get back as i had snow in my eyes all the way back & most of her work colleagues are too fat or lazy to walk the stairs let alone to walk to work, and are staying at home.

Im not going out today thru risk of an accident on the roads, its bad enough walking in it, but i would if i had too, least my missus get to sit in a warm office.

Too many people i this country are too soft, too lazy and too fat do do anything but drive.. yep soon as the roads are covered, its im not going, lets close it all!

this country is just like andrex! SOFT

I'm not working today although its blue skies.
I live in a dead end road and my van is parked facing uphill with 650 ltrs onboard, hardly anyones moved their cars in the last 2 days, those who have tried have wheelspinned like mad. Went for a long walk up onto the downs yesterday in the thick of it snowboarding. Buses werent even running. Roads were quiet and had never seen so many people out of their cars and walking ! random strangers talking to one another and sharing in the rare spectacle ,was quite a refreshing sight.

We would all be moaning if they spent billions of our tax money on an infrastructure to cope with weather that we only get once every 20 years though!

What would happen if it lasted weeks? The country would be on it's knees.
(And don't say it won't. With the weather becoming more extreme, it could.)
It doesn't have to be the government who spends money. A legal requirement for snow chains on vehicles, etc would help a lot.
Do all the good you can, and make as little fuss about it as possible.
