ARE WE ENTERTAINING TOO MANY NEW STARTERS.?
« on: December 19, 2008, 12:08:15 am »
Like i said in previous posts... i was in sales.. bought a van... pressure washed driveways at weekends... then gradually built a round...

There was no credit crunch/looming recession then,... and i wanted , out of the rat race...

But now... its  a very different situation....

How long will it be until the new guys are not being helped on here?

How long will it be before they are resented..for taking parts of our work away?

Are you happy with this?

Its an easy game to get in to... and thats fine.....normally...

but is it fine.. now ?... when there are so many people losing jobs...

Should we make them feel as welcome as in the past?

what are your views on this.

im not being cynical.... or pulling anyone down... especially the new guys who are trying to work, and earn a living for his/her family....

But come on guys.... think about it...  its a great forum... and very helpful....

but will there be a time in the near future to.. well, shut up shop...

similar to an earnings topic, ?.. which is viewed with distain from the most sensible members...

Am i out of order for thinking on these lines.? ???

I Can understand what you are saying, I believe if you have customers already and they are happy with you, they will be loyal, you may get the odd couple who would switch to another window cleaner.
BTW, was you a newbie once  ;D
Im new on here, are there loads of other newbies joined lately?
Reading your post you want the work for yourself, and I can totally understand.

no i think you are spot on.  there's too many window cleaners about now for competition to be healthy.

I haven't lost much work lately but I have lost a few to new window cleaners who are happy to work their butts off for peanuts.

it'll ruin this industry i tell you, too many isn't good.

I've never been to bed with an ugly bird but I've woken up with loads!

Some people are cheep ,whatever they are getting in life, be it a mp3 player or a Window cleaner.
the thing about window cleaning is that it isn't rocket science ???, but it is hard work getting started, and I think a lot of start ups will think "yes undercut the lot of them and I'm sorted", but then they see the amount of work they have to do compaired with established guys, most will get the beer money and disapear.
So, I say keep helping the newer guys with their questions,at least untill I have all my questions answered. Then stop and let them  make their own mistakes ;D

If you are established and do a good job then you shouldn't have too much to worry about. It's the start ups who are going to suffer - they will be the ones who can't get enough work to survive. I think most customers if they are happy with you will stick by you. Just hope i'm not wrong.  :)

That will sort itself out though. Eventually a bad winter and days without work will pee them off and they will be into another job or back on the dole.

im sensing panic here ;D

i started about two yrs ago through choice and i wouldnt have been
doing half as well if it wasnt for forums such as this.the economy has changed
and things will get tougher but it isnt the first time we have had a recession
and guys who i have spoken to have been in this situation before and have
come through it. As one local cleaner i know said to me rough with the smooth
mate keep your head down crack on with it and hopefully you will survive

or close the forums down dont talk or help anybody and start moaning
about patches ::)

I see your point Gazzap8 but we have a duty to help these guys out...as you have said it was not too long ago you and I started out.  We have both been very fortunate these past 2 and something years that we can sit back a little and count our lucky stars...

Now this is not directed at you Gazzap8....

Just think guys...some of those who are coming on here as starters could be in very desperate situations and could lose everything come the New Year...

We should all show a little dignity and help where we can and for most of us that is just giving a little advice.

Dave.

To actually build a worth while and profitable business, you need to work long hours and its hard work. Do the graft during the day, and then in the evening look at the books, phone customers, deal with quotations, plan your marketing, design flyers, DIY your equipment :P, Go Canvassing the list goes on.. Many dont realise this once you start to increase in cutomers.

Cutomers that use these cheap alternatives, do so at their own risk - because the cheaper alternatives will not last, then they say my last window cleaner did it for £5 - well where is he then?, He probably gave up as it was too much effort, for too little money! Or anything along those lines.. ive used it myself. Ask them, were they a professional, trained window cleaner with adequate insurance? I ve no idea, probably not then ::)

The reason window cleaners disappear is they either go out of business or get better paying jobs as they have realised they priced too cheaply in the first place. Under cutters are their own worst enemy, they price cheap to get it but have to work those cheap jobs themselves.

Working during the summer is hard, its hot work, i hate the summer i prefer the spring and autumn months, more pleasurable to work in - and the winters can be a killer.. you need to be prepared for window cleaning for the long term. Its not just climbing up and ladder and splashing water about..

a nice quote for this could be

"Grass always looks greener on the other side" or at least it something like that..

the funny thing is, i ws saying this 12 - 18 months ago with the massive influx of east europeans into this country

i guess it didnt pan out that way

it will most prob have a effect on the prices, the more who will do it for 7 quid will mean the guys who charge 12 quid will loose out, wont it ? ?? ???

tough time ahead ive been told time and time again when i mentioned i would be late as i was off to orlando / disney for 2 weeks, you shouldnt go, save your money etc etc, life is too short to live by what-if's and may-be's, grab it, enjoy it and if the worse happens, then moan about it  ;)

Dave.

I agree with this sentiment. I've been helped and will pass that help on if i can. So they can pass it on if they can. And so on.

We were moaning about the east Europeans 6 months ago (that never materialised into a viable threat to our livelihoods) now its the locals, what will it be in 12 months time? Dont forget its also been self-cleaning glass, cheap DI resin containers from Omnipole, B+Q stocking rubbers.

Whatever......get over it, get out there do what you need to do, stop bloody moaning, sort your stuff out and make a good living.

So friggin what if someone wants to start window-cleaning.

Show me someone on this forum who woke up one day and suddenly decided THAT day they were going to go out , buy a fleet of vehicles fitted out to clean windows waterfed pole, employ a dozen operatives, take over a whole chunk of the country and rob every window cleaner in that locality of his livelihood. There isnt one, stop worrying, everyone starts somewhere. Let them.

Moaning about it wont change a damn thing.

Just today I went out and priced up a house. The lady who owned it said she had walked past my house where my sign-written van is (with web address on it) checked out my web-site and so then gave me a call. I went up to have a look at her place, there were 2 guys working off ladders with a Ford Escort parked in the road right opposite her house. Why didnt she ask them instead of me?

In which case she'd have said 'Ill get back to you' once I'd put my price in.

Then asked them.

Trad newbies won`t last long it`ll be to cold for em most days this time of the year especially if there used to working indoors,if they`ve been brave enough to go straight in WFP then maybe they`ll last a bit longer but even then some will fall by the wayside.Once they find out it`s not all easy money and they actually have to work for a living they`ll be gone and will never return to WC again,in the past i`ve heard a lot of people say yeah i`ve tried WC and i spent my days frozen to the core, those types will spring up all over the place at the moment but when jobs are easier to get they`ll be back indoors working the tarts lol. ;D

What a bit of a negative post, there are more windows :-[ than w/cers- always. The newbies that fail do us a service in that they educate the customers into our uniquelly british time honoured tradition. When the p/timers  pack in because they are too cheap the custy has been trained to clean glass and looks for another.
Seasons greetings and a bright new year  :) :)
