Cleaning your Poles
« on: March 06, 2005, 08:37:07 am »
I posted this topic over on Cleningpros a while ago and thought it may be of some use on here as well, I am sure everyone knows how to look after their own gear but occasionally things can get missed so there maybe one or two out there who might benefit.
Keeping equipment clean and in good condition is vital if it is to last any length of time,
The advice I was given to look after my pole was to dismantle weekly and flush with water, clean all the fittings and apply a lubricant of some kind.
This is good advice and works well, (to a point) we all know that just flushing with water is not enough to clean a window, which is why we use a brush to dislodge the dirt first.
I have adopted a method I was taught in the forces to clean my weapon known as a pull through, to keep my Omnipole in good order and I find it is doing a great job.
It is very simple yet very effective.
All that is required is a length of thin strong string, which is slightly longer than the pole sections, with a loop at one end and a weight at the other. Put a small piece of cloth through the loop, drop the weighted end down the tube till it comes out the other end and PULL THROUGH.
Simple as that.
If you have never cleaned the inside of your pole give it go and watch the crud come out.

I did this a few times before i realised that it helps a lot to soak another cloth in vaseline and drag that down the inside of the pole as well.  This helps the smooth extending and retracting of the pole.

Does the Vaseline not get onto the outer part of the pole as it slides through and make it slippery to hold?

I'm not a WFP user, but I have used too big a cloth to pull through a rifle barrel.  It got stuck half-way though, so I tied the end of the pull through around a tree branch, then yanked hard on the rifle end.  The string snapped!

The rifle ended up geing passed to an armourer to get it out.  He then raised an NMD Report (Negligent  Missuse and Damage) and I think I was eventually charged £50.00 for the mistake.

The moral; make sure the cloth on the end of your 'pull through' isn't the size of a bath towel!

yeah i think it would be a good idea to do a bit of maintenence on my omnipole.im looking to develope a reel for my trolley as i think this would help stop the build up of crap that attaches to hose, because the hose drags on the floor, the hose then goes up into the pole and hey presto you then have a mingin pole with dirt and grit inside. >:(
