Did I screw up my first decent commercial pricing?
« on: November 06, 2008, 08:57:36 pm »
Had a call today from the daughter of a current customer to go and price up the company she worked for. The building consisted of 8 large windows - 10 foot by 7 foot to be done in and out. There was another window about 2x2 and two double glass doors. All needed doing in and out twice monthly.

I won't give my price just yet but the guy laughted and said I was way out. What would you have quoted?

All ground floor by the way, no access problems.

I recently priced a commercial unit; the front of the place is full of glass; so to the manager, I priced it at £80 inside and out - every-other-month - but said I'd do the same place at £60, outside-only, with insides done three-times-per-year at no extra charge.  His choice.  I honestly thought that this job was 'in the bag' because I priced it so fairly.

Now I know the manager sociably; he runs in Wor Lasses running club; and we've had a few beers over the years together, we have a running club dinner night every year and we often bump into each other in our local Tescos and chat too.  He knows I'm no 'vagabond-drug-taking window cleaner'.

Anyway, I told him I do the same commercial unit over the road for £124, every-other-month (a mirror image of his own business); so he was getting a 'mate rate', which he was.

... but he looked at me like I was ripping him off; I could tell by his wide-eyes when I said the price; and I promise, it was a fair price for the work involved.

He said he'd get back to me, but hasn't; I won't be chasing this one up either.

Wor Lass knows him better than I, and the local running club's nick-name for him is 'Nasty Nick' (because he's a bit of 'lad' when it comes to the 'ladies'; despite being married with two young children).

I guess to some people, even bright-educated types; we're still just worth the minimum wage.

Ive never been one for commercial, but id have gone for probably over £50.. No wonder i never get any commercial jobs.. they are just after slave labourers.. I prefer doing residential jobs anyway, so im not that fussed, but its interesting to know other price ranges by you guys.. i'd like to know the amount you quoted to start this off.

i would have said £45.00, but that's without seeing it and how busy is the road its on as some roads see a lot of lorries going up and down them buses etc this will tell me how dirty it will get. this can change the price.

I would have said...

Bi-weekly............................................................£30
((that's £60 a month)

I would have given him another option

Outside Bi=weekly & insides cleaned monthly.....£45
(that's £45 a month

But then I don't have many commercial work either... as someone said "Slave Labour"

I said £50 bi weekly. Ladders would have been needed for the insides. He laughed and said he used to pay £15.00 and that was all he could stretch to.

I said I can't do just about 1000 square foot of glass for £15.00 but if he could find someone who would he should snap their hands off.

Between £35 to £50 depends what area they are.

It's quite a wealthy area and part of a national well known chain of furiture shops.

He's obviously after them doing on the cheap. I wouldn't be surprised to get called back to do them to then be told 'we will call you when they need doing again'.

i know a fella starting up and his mother in law goes to toni and guy to get her hair done the old wc might be retiring so she offers up my mate to give the shop a price. he asks me and looking at the windows nice big panes x 4 i'm £8.00 per clean. it turns out they are three times a week, so maybe i come down by a bit to £6.00 a clean..........price now  £2.00 a clean, £6.00 a week. shop fronts are not for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
