I cleaned a lounge carpet this morning, std polyprop with latex/jute backing.

Just had a phone call from the lady, she says she is concernced that the carpet has stretched, looks baggy and has air pockets in middle, I finished the clean about 3 1/2 hours ago, it looked fine when I left, I asked her if the carpet was still damp and she said it was.

I told her not to worry that it will go back when its dried and its only when they go the other way and shrink that you have to worry !!!  ::) - am I right, or should I change my telephone numbers?  ;)

I told her to let it dry out and ring me tomorrow if the problem is still there.

Anyone ever had this problem? so much for relaxing tonight.

P.S think I've found a used cimex Mike, going to look Monday, just not sure weather its set up for encap CC i.e shampoo feed and what base plate/ fittings it has.

Yes Mike, I really want one!! I think I can make it pay, I have a dream.  ;)

Obviously for commercial, not domestic.

I can't think of another system that offers so many unique selling points and the ability to demo in 5 mins is another big plus.

After reading a lot of stuff on tinternet I have my doubts about that chem you experimented with (the one you cut open the vac bag) apparently there are a lot of so called crystalising shampoo's that appear to clean well, but fail to encapsulate, found some good sites, I will drop Geoff an e-mail it makes for interesting reading.

1- 2 days for full relaxation of carpeting it happens especially on older carpets but don't worry.

BTW I wasn't impressed with Quantum of Solace, I went yesterday to go and see it with my son, wish I'd have gone to see High Schol Musical 3 with my daughter.

Had the same thing this week - 3 ridges in the carpet, 2nd one in as many months.

Back to normal the next day, as the guys said don't worry.

I did a carpet in my first year of trading, it was a dining hall of an officers mess, approx 20m x 20m !!

As I was nearing the end of the clean I could see the areas that I had done first bubbling up to a height of about 6" off the ground, I was sh!tting myself.

Just then the Mess Manager came in and asked if that was normal, I bullsh!tted and explained that it was air trapped under the carpet and it would settle down when dry, he walked away happy and it did just that...............luckily!

We did all the other carpets in the mess, bedrooms, conference rooms, corridors, all exactly the same carpet but the dining room was the only one that bubbled.  ???

Does anyone understand what causes it?

used to do a indian restaurant, within hours of leaving a tunnel appeared right accross the room (about 30ft) and it was 6 inches high, custy went mad called me back in, i explained and the next day problem was gone, it became a standing joke for the next few yearswhen the carpet was cleaned.

It's caused by expansion of the backing, due to heat or moisture.
Widely believed to be primarily Latex glue. You will reach a point where
you will know on sight if it is likely to occur, and can fore warn the customer,
that way it doesn't sound like an excuse.
Usually you can see where the ripples are correspond to where overlap strokes
cause extra dampening.

I find its nylon tufted with polyprop secondary backs that do it about 4yrs or older.Looks like the Himalayas but most settle down, others need trimming when totally dry. Apparently as said its the latex glue swelling with heat and moisture.

its sometimes caused by overwetting which can cause de-lamination of the glued backing causing the top layer of backing to seperate, can normally be stretched back, sometimes its just where furniture has been dragged around on a poorly fitted carpet!

russell, how do you work out that water is going to 'melt' the glue backing?

You can cause this by dragging sofas and chairs across the carpet, even on sliders. Always lift them.
