I once read on here that resin goes off after a while. I read that days after buying a big bag of the stuff about 18 months ago. After changing prefilters and using that resin, my reading is 002. Not really that much to worry about, i know. But to those in the know, is that more than likely why it's not 000? Cheers lads.

Yes it can go off.  Usually this is down to not being stored in a completely air-tight light-proof container.  If buying a large sack of resin, it's best to completely tape up the bag after use with no space for air gaps and store it somewhere cool and dark.

Yeh it's kept in the dark alex....not entirely airtight, i confess  I guess it's ok then to keep using it, just keep a close eye on the readings?

So a black bucket/box with air tight lid would be ideal to store it in?

Let's see if Tupperware does something like that.

I think that you are not supposed to let it dry out - I've heard drying out knackers it quicker than anything.

Resin needs to be stored in a sealed bag. Two things can happen if opened .

The resin absorbs the moisture in the air thus making it spent
It drys out as resin has 65% moisture content, if dried it cracks rendering it useless
Also resin can go mouldy, black tar effect which often happens in winter times on a foggy day

It needs to be sealed air tight once opened and stored in a dry place. Resin can last upto 2 yrs opened.

My big bag is nearly 2 years old and I still have over half a bag left.
When I use mine I twist the inner bag starting from the resin up, so that no air is in the bag, I stick an elastic band around the twisted inner bag, the outer bag is just folded over then its stored under the stairs, so I mist be doing something right for it to have lasted this long.

i seem to be going through a lot of resin, i have a di system but i go through twice as much but im not doing twice a as much work, this couldnt be the effect of leaving it in the shed could it?

Ronnie a strong contender will be your di vessel having an impact. Give it a thorough MOT. I have had a few customers whose  resin did not perform what it should do and the main cause was the di vessel.

That's what I do but I stick mine up in the attic, keeps okay.

lol, check if the riser is still circular and not flattened, check if the screens are still looking okay. If they are crooked, the water doesn't go through the resin properly.

i guess the riser is the tube??? and the strainers still seem fine, i would take it to brodex for a mot but it would prob cost me a arm and leg!!

What a load of gollocks, resin does not go off, i have had the same  two bags for the last 3 years as i live in a soft water area and tds remains the same as long as you replace your pre filters and flush your membranes on a regular basis.

My resin is stored in the same manufactured bags and store in the garage which does let light in.

What a load of rubbish about keeping out of the light unless the manufacturers say to do so, where is the scientific research to back this claim up.

So IMO resin does not go off not in 3 years anyway.

Hi Ronnie,

Check the tube is a tight fit in the head and is circular, what I have found if it is not a tight fit this allows the water you are flowing into the di vessel to mix with the pure water going out. Also check to see if there is no cracks in the head as the di vessel does get knocked a bit.

These are a few of the things I have found that can go wrong and have an effect.

My bag of resin is over 3 years old; it's fine; no problems with it, and it's stored in a damp shed full of spiders and woodlice!
