I knock and if they're out I post a leaflet through their doors.

If they're in, I'm quick, precise and to the point, and if they are not interested I hand them a leaflet and its a 'thank you for your time' and I'm gone.

For me, door knocking is best and anyway, I get bored just doing leaflets.

Bite the bullet..door knocking is much better in my opinion.  At least you have the control of knocking on the doors you would like to clean and if you are smart/professional and simply ask the house holder if they would like a professional and regular window cleaner you wont get too much of a negative response.  If they already have one they will tell you, but beware of undercutting someone to get the work. ie if they ask you 'so how much would you charge?' if they already have a cleaner, I say, 'if you already have a cleaner I am not going to compete with him.  Maybe just my code, but I find there is plenty of work out there without taking business from someone else.
