love window cleaning but not enough to fall off a ladder
« on: September 09, 2008, 12:23:35 am »
Done roofing for 20 odd yrs, so I know about climbing and feeling safe while doing a job
Done window cleaning for 1 yr and had so many near misses purely through moving ladder from one surface, level to another.
Got to know a local cleaner who broke his back yrs ago and had to be taken to hospital by ambulance at an excruciating 10 miles an hour
He`s still window cleaning and climbing ladders, he must earn good money cos hes got one of the biggest rounds in our area.He must just be set in his ways.
My dad was killed many years ago,35yrs old at work on oil-rigs- fall from height
Its not nice.
Many of you guys have done trad for yrs without so much as a scrape, fair play to you,
I darent take any new risks so while im cleaning, my feet are gonna be on the ground in the near future.
WFP or Trad- just play it safe.
Keep rolling out the best info on the tinternet guys :)

I fell off a ladder and broke my leg in 2 places, so I was lucky.

Went on with a ladder for 10 more years, WFP now though.

I cringe every time i step off ladder onto a roof etc, ive had a couple of big falls but have been extremely lucky to come away with only bruises, last one, i was doing a big bay upstairs on the back of a house and below me the ladder was on a nice shiny pressed concrete surface, in my haste to finish the house i didnt stop and think, still cant understand why i didnt get footed to this day, anyway-shot up ladder and after soaping up window bang, ladder gone and i fell all way down and hit a bench at bottom, luckily the bench came out worse than me!! I just had a dead leg for the rest of the day, still worked for another 5 hours, but i wasnt as quick to go up them climbs for a few days:)

I have had the ladders slip back twice, but fortunately not all the way back, so i ended up staring at the wall.

Both times were scary. Now i always double check the footing everytime i walk up the ladder. You cannot be too safe.

Where am I knocking today?

I started window cleaning 21 years ago.

And in all that time i have only fell one and that was about 4 steps up from the ground.
Wet feet and they slipped and of course i wasn't expecting it and before i knew it i was on my backside.

I have had hundreds of scares though.
Where you take things for granted.

I have had them slip sideways, slip at the bottom.
Missing the step on the way down.

I still like ladder work but im a lot more cautious these days since i changed to WFP.
Only do about 2 hours a month now on ladders just to keep my hand in.
