Previous Damp Issue still effecting Bed
« on: September 08, 2008, 07:06:50 pm »
Hi,

I'm looking for advise.

I moved out of a property after a damp problem caused by a leak in the attic. All my belongings smelt strongly of damp. The clothes were washed and washed until clean. However I am having trouble with my bed.

I've gone over the exteriour with mold/mildew spray cleaners and stored in another warm house for 18 months but there is still a smell of damp.

I don't want to throw away the bed as it cost nearly £1000 and was only 4months old when I vacated the damp house.

The bed is a divan with material covered wooden base, material headboard. There is no visable damp on the exterior.

Thanks in advance.
Louis

When you say a damp problem, do you mean the bed actually got wet. If so then it is likely a fungal growth has taken hold on the interior of the bed. Even when the moisture has been removed the remnants of the fungal growth will still be giving off an odour.
I'm afraid surface sprays will do nothing to eradicate this. If the bed got really wet then nothing will really cure the problem and I would get rid of it.

If its one with the box and a lining sheet underneath try cutting a hole to allow you to fog the inside with prochem a222

Hi,

Thanks for the two replies. There was a huge ammount of mosture in the room and air as a result of the leak and even though the bed never felt soaking wet I am sure it has absobed mosture during this time.
I feared that fungal growth may have occured inside the bed as some visable fungal growth occured on the underside of the drawers with have now been removed.

There is no external fungal growth however I am assuming there may be inside the mattress?

I have cut away the underside of the base, and inspected, there was no visable growth however gave a good clean.

Is there anyway I can fumiate the mattress to remove any possible internal fungal growth?

Thanks for the info so far

Louis

Hi BDCS

Thanks for your posts. After your first post I did look at the product you recomend on several websites and noticed there was no mention anti fungal?

I've now ordered a bottle.

Thanks
Louis
