Pump problems on portables
« on: August 01, 2008, 10:58:21 pm »
I'v had problems lately with pumps leaking, causing the motor also to fail due to water ingress (very expensive to repair!).

I'm refering to the piston type pump.

Now fitting an inline strainer (filter) to my Ninja 400 psi as the piston seems scored after only 7 months use. Just replaced motor and pump head £400 +.  Seems to me that airborn dust & grit is getting through the not very effective strainer at the bottom of the solution tank.

Anyone else had the same problem?

Also found that Shureflow recomend an inline filter for thier caravan pumps to prevent damage......never known this about carpet cleaning machines until I ordered a Stinger pump kit from A&M Cleaning which included an inline filter.

A common mistake is to use one bucket for filling and emptying, fibres can ruin a pump after time, I have had problems over the years, although now we are using a Truckmount.

As above too.

Are you using powder in the unit and if the filter lets it in maybe its blocking the pump.

i have had no probs..Hope you sort it..

good point

if you are using powder i usually scoop in to bucket  and the fill with hot tap water(whilst mixing)
this way the powder dissolves before you put into the machine......and thus not clogging the tea strainer
just a thought......

My pump started to fail after 22 months. My engineer explained that when taken apart it was a bit like a 4 stroke engine but was only firing on 3 cylinders.

He spoke to somebody (I can find out) and bought just a new pump head as opposed to a new pump which came in I think at about £40 for the parts.

Sounds and performs great once again.

Yes, many powdered products have fillers in them that need to be completely desolved before dumping in the freash water tank as "Spindle2K" said. That old hot water trick, making a wet slurry will add months of use to your pump.  Jon

The best way to make sure the powder is disolved is to mix in a jug of boiling water then tipping straight into the solution tank before the tap water.

Ive had a Prochem powerplus for only three months and the pump completely failed on Friday.  I spoke to the manufacturer and they reckoned the brushes had worn due to heavy use!

Heavy use?  Chance would be a fine thing.  If only I could find enough customers to allow the machine to be used heavily!

So Im now waiting patiently on an engineer visiting me in Edinburgh.

Are you sure its the pump and not a problem with the switch?

Fraiser did they have a look at the pump mate?

Doubt it v much that it would go by three months also if you got it new would still be covered by them :)

When you swithch it on is there any sound at all?

I would go with mark on this and could be a loose conection on the front of the switch.

Prior to it not working was it ok on your last job? clinton
