I feel a new hobby coming on
« on: July 25, 2008, 04:21:38 pm »
Reading a post regarding Tank cages, I couldn't believe the prices of them, I know these companies have overheads and raw material costs but £360 for a 400ltr tank cage made me choke on my cupa, I know I can do them a lot cheaper than that, I have a good friend whom I get all my metal from and box steel is a good choice for a cage.

I have been welding for over 20 years, (as a hobby) I used to do a lot of decor scroll work and sell it at car boots sales, I made it through the winter and sold it in the summer, I always made enough money to take my family away for a decent holiday, but for some unknown reason I just stopped doing It.

Now come the end of September, I will have more spare time on my hands, after reading the post , I thought now there is a good way to make a few extra shillings for the gas meter  ;D  build tank cages to any ones spec or to standard size's, I can also make pole holders.

The only down side is they will not be powder coated unless specifically requested and then that price will have to be increased but for the bulk standard type, I will prime and paint them, another thing I will have to look into is carriage costs.

I may even look into making metal hose reels if I can source the fitting needed.

If anyone has any thoughts or idea's on my project idea's, then please let me know, good or bad I'm open to them all.

Hi Luke

I have to build one for my daughter when she gets her van within the next few weeks, I also have to make her some pole holders, when I have made it all, I'll put some pictures up for you all to see.

If anyone needs one with different specs I'll do it, I was thinking of adding a swivel plate to the top to mount the hose reel onto it, so I can do that as an add on if anyone wanted it.
Like I said I'm open to idea's and suggestions from anyone.

Because I know the price of steel, I know how much I can build one for.

If I had staff and rent to pay for, them maybe I would charge you £360, I am also fully aware that not all the guy's on here can afford the £360 for a cage and if I can build them cheaper using steel and sell them for a small profit, then not only am I making money but I know I'm helping to keep yet another w/c safe in his travels.

Leave it with me and I'll get one on the drawing board.

I`ll have 1 Jeff if there any good, look forward to pics.

Over the next couple of weeks I'll have it built and painted and then I'll post the pics.

Once there primed, I may offer a few options on paint, hand painted with hammerite in the choice of colours available, or primed and sprayed using cellulose paint, if anyone wanted a powder paint, then I would have to get a separate price from a local paint company but that price would have to be added to the total cost.

Or I could just prime them and the end user could paint his own all this helps to keep there costs down.

I can add a plate on the front for flow controllers and pumps and so on.

I'm also going to have to check out a few web-sites for the size of the standard tanks so I can get the correct measurements

My thoughts exactly.  If you cant afford to spend a tax-deductable £360 on your window cleaning business then sorry but you're in the wrong business.  For most people thats not even 2 days work for equipment that will last years.
My friends call me Tuppence Clean

Because we all have to start somewhere? If your building up your system then an extra £360 doesn't come easy to everyone.
How are you getting on with your top of the range Ionics system - have you got any more pictures for us?
