How did you start your window cleaning business?
« on: February 02, 2005, 04:29:36 am »
Hey dudes:

How did you begin your business?  As we all know, we love our trade or we would not persue it. I'll bet there are many stories of why and how.

I will begin by describing my why's and how's.

I attended college to become a teacher. While I was waiting for my first teaching job to begin, a friend of mine owned a jewelry store, and she asked me if I would clean the windows for $15.00.  :D

Since I had no luck finding a decent paying job( I had been to college for 4 years), I said "sure".  So I went to my local janitorial supply store and bought a couple of squeegees, a bucket, some cleaning solution, a scrubber, and a pole. I used some old towels I had laying around. I remember specifically I spent $ 47.00. ;D

I have always enjoyed physical work and used to be an athlete and a cheerleader (5 years) so I liked it. Instantly. It was rough, and I had no one to teach me, so it took forever, but I liked it.  8)

The drugstore next door asked me to do their's. Another store asked me to do theirs. I  made enough money to pay for my investment and had $10.00 profit. The First day!  :o

So the next day I had business cards made up and began pounding the pavement; door to door business areas. Wow! :o I was on my way.

Now don't think it was easy. I marketed my services every day; worked 7 days if I needed to, and more or less set my goal and went for it.

I beleive you "reap what you sow" so I tried to sow lots of "seeds".
It was a lot of work; a lot of trying to pick up new clients constantly.  :P

It took a few years before I could survive completely from the business.
I had a decent life style so that was awsome to be able to be entirely self employed.  :-*

There is something to be said for beginning with one client; no training, not much money, and a crappy car, and making it to this point.  ;)

It was worth it. I am very thankful. Any advice I would give anyone would be that if you do nothing to grow your business you will not grow. You will get out of it what you put into it. ;)

Now I have over 300 accounts and a crew of 5 . It can be done!  It depends entirely on what you are willing to put into it, and you need to be patient and focused. I am pleased with the size of my business because it is a decent income and I can manage it myself. :-*

Anyway, How about you all out there, Chaps? Share your motive for beginning and also how. We are all blessed that have been able to make it. If you are making it, you are successful. :D

Take care! Grab life by the horns and go for it!  What have you got to lose?  :-*

I started back in 1985. I used to walk down the main street to work and saw several window cleaners, and thought that looks easy. Ha ha, and then decided to try to get a bit of work on a saturday. First day earnt £15 between us, and felt like I had been kicked to death by Millwall fans. :) Within weeks had 4 full saturdays, and earning more in one day than in a week at regular job. So it was a case if I could earn £30 more in one day, what could I do in a week ££££. ;D So left full time job and went for it. No regrets best thing ive done, allways up for a laugh, and my customers are my friends. One even invited me to her ruby wedding anerversary wich cost 3 million pounds for the day, party of a life time. So have enjoyed every minute. Am I sad or what????

You aren't sad at all, Roy!

I remember my first full day - I earned £42 (back in 1996) and you could've wheeled me home in a wheelbarrow!
It's a game of three halves!

I found myself out of work and a guy offered me a job working for him, he was paying me £10 per day (that’s how long ago it was) anyway  at one stage I was doing a massive office complex, it was so big it used to take me 4-5 days to complete. He was being paid £400 for the job and I was getting £50 for a weeks work, I asked him to give me a pay rise as he was making £350 profit out of just 1 of the jobs. He refused and I replied “if you don’t pay me more I will leave and start on my own” his reply was “you’ll never manage on your own” so I brought an applicator, squeegge, bucket and scrims from him out of my last  pay packet, borrowed a ladder from a friend and the rest as they  say IS HISTORY

I left school in 1982 and my dad told me i eather get a job or work with him in a stone quarry, i was not going to do that so me and my brother started window cleaning, mainly for friends and family.
I was offered a job on a building site with good money so i gave up the windows, after a row of poor jobs i came back to the windows, this time with a professinal attitude and formed my company and am still building up my round and repution, going good and getting better each day.

Zeus:

That is very cool how you have started from nothing. It makes you feel proud that you have done it for yourself.  :o

Just sold my last business and had a month off before the next project. Anyway i was sitting there thinking of what i could do staring into the skys then all of a sudden the window cleaner turned up. I sat and watched him and thought i could do better than that and it looks really easy ( how wrong was i on the easy part)

I started from nothing and went straight into WFP on domestic's, its gone down great wfp with the customers as they get there fames cleaned as well, best part i am over 100% more than another cleaner in my area, which shows customers will pay extra for a proffessional job, i am still building my business as well at the moment with some great addon's Ie Softie , Fasica , Conservatory and Gutter cleaning which you earn a hell of alot more from than window cleaning.

Debbie i sent you a PM its on the top right hand corner just click on the message part.

Cheers

Hi,I was working in a family business.I was supposed to be a partner in the business with my dad & two brothers. After working for 11 1/2 years was still earning nothing and generally being treated like something you find on the bottom of your shoe.I had totally lost confidence in myself & was quite badly depressed.I felt I had nowhere to go.
Then I met an old friend of mine whole used to manage a hotel in town.He told me he had just sold his window cleaning round & the guy was refusing to pay up the money owed him for it after arranging monthly payments.
I had no idea he was a window cleaner. He had just qualified to become a chiropodist & obviously needed some money to start.
He gave me some advise & told me where to get some tools.I went out to some small villages near me to canvass for some work.I found this v difficult but I'm glad to say persevered.Put an advert in local paper too.
I would go w cleaning when I finished work & at weekends as I got busier.
When I told my dad I wanted to start window cleaning he smirked & said that 3.50 divided by 4 people wasn't much.Prat.
Anyway, I took no notice & did my own thing.
By November (8 months later) I had enough customers to go full time.Dad didn't say to me but did to others that it was the wrong choice by me & I wouldn't last long.
Nearly 8 years later I earn more in half a day than I did for a full weeks work in the family biz.But more importantly I am v happy doing what I am doing & in life in general.I love the freedom to do what I want to do when I want to. :)

Justin,

I think it is awsome how you have taken charge of your life and your income.  ;D  Some of my relatives thought the same about me.

It is great to be able to prove them wrong; but more importantly, to be able to be in charge of your own circumstances.  :o

You should be proud of yourself

cheers

Hi, Texas Girl. The first 5 years were great working in the family biz, but then thimgs changed.
The most disappointing thing was that I never went onto further education because I had a job & I thought a business waiting for me.
As you say I am in charge of my life & my business, which I decide how both are run (if that's o.k. with the mrs).
I know I would never be able to enjoy the quality of life I have now.I've always worked hard but now I get the benefits from it. :)
