The idea has merit but the fuel consumption on those things is terrible. Also, a bit chavvy for a family car. Round here all the pikeys drive them which puts me off the idea of ever owning one.

i like the l200 myself, and i was almost going to get one....but now ive bought the vivaro, i know ive made the right choice

comfort, 3 seats (could have one with crew cab) and 700 + miles out of a tank? let me know how many you get out of the tank in the pickup

The Izuzu Rodeo 2.5 should get up to the 40mpg mark, as for the L200 it sure likes it's fuel, mind you it can go like the clappers with a fully loaded trailer.
 The Toyota should be O.K. if you have the one with the least horse power, but you'll probably find it slugish, give them a go, it's the only way to find out.

I like the vivaros don`t get me wrong,but i can`t help but sratch my head when i hear people talk about fuel consumption on them.You`ll get more miles per tank with them against a van like a partner or similar but the fuel tank is half as big again,a vivaro might cost £100 to fill where`s a smaller van will cost £50-60.In reality they are no better on fuel.

yeh i know what your saying, no theyre no more better (good english) than a little van, but being able to go 700 + miles without filling up, instead of filling up every 500 like i did in my partner, i do around 500 a week, so 4 fills a month, now its gonna be more like 2 maybe 3 fills

I must admit I have been thinking of some sort of pick up myself.  As I have cut down on the windows I wont need a huge tank and it would be good for the family too.  I know everyone thinks you get a free pair of rigger boots when you get one but they are better than some vans you see about.

Ewan, I run a l200 and its fantastic. Had it for the last 2 months when i bought a freedom trolley. I can carry 300 litres of water and all my trad stuff. I have a caravan as well so its ideal for holidays. Got 2 kids and a missus so the five seats is great. Road tax is the same as any other commercial vehicle so that is cheaper than running a 4x4 car. Its looks great in black with blacked out rear windows and a snugtop on the back. Getting nearly 50 miles to a tenner nipping around the village with 300 litres of water. I only do 80 miles a week so it aint going to bankrupt me. Mine is a warrior 04 plate and costs me under £40 a week on finance. I love it and much prefer it to my old mondeo

On the whole though i would say that a medium sized van would be the best choice for most,you then at least have the option to expand without having to get a new van.

why do you not consider an estate car my 250 litre tank sat flat in my laguna reels and ro on top poles on roof

I did it a few months back with a Nissan Navara and its the nuts, felt too big at first but fine now. Best thing is that your cab wont smell of wet cloths or ever flood!! I get 400 miles per tank driving hard with aircon on. System is strapped in so it can be removed at any time should I need the space.

I use a Nissan Z22. Bought from new.

 It's a 2 wheel drive with three seater cab. 2.5 litre turbo diesel seems very good on the mpg and plenty of power (Had my previous one 14 years from new)

Love working from a pick up but wouldn't drive around in it as a family car.

700+ miles out of a Vivaro tank?  I generally top mine up once it's got to about 450 - 475 miles but if I pushed my luck, maybe I could get 520 out of it.  I have a 100DCI diesel with 90 litre tank.  Maybe you have an LPG version though that has a fairly low mpg the benefirt being the cost?
