tds reading from 40 inch ro system?
« on: July 13, 2008, 04:43:59 pm »
just fitted a new membrain in my 40inch ro system. Iwas getting a crazy reading before of 180 odd. Now with a brand new membrain in still getting a reading of 90 after 4 hrs flushing surely this is not normal? Why is it still so high? Been told the ro should bring in down to around 20 before it goes thru resin. My tds from tap is around 470  ??? Does it need longer flushing?

It's not flushing that it needs.  It needs to be run in production mode for a while NOT connected to your DI. Initially the reading can be high but it shoud settle quickly then you can connect it to your DI and make water.

Do you have a softener? Also are you running enough waste water? If you cut down the waste too low your TDS out will be high. Maybe also you have low water pressure.

the softener will make tds sky high, did with mine
make sure you do not taste any salt in the water after the sofener as it will eat/kill the membrane the lowest I have every got my 40/40 is 9tds with a booster pump, 19 without. waste water being loads or minimal really does not make very much difference imo 2/3 tds higher or lower, this is my findings.

tds still about 60  >:( Will a booster pump make all the difference how much are they and where do you get them. Not sure if it will be cost effective for me as im only going through around1000 lts a week at the moment.  Is this tds normal this high andrew or ian? also noticed memebrain had no rubber seal on end of old or new one? Hope thats the norm also guessed it was they both looked the same?

I find when moving van tds goes silly high, 10 mins when stopped it comes back down, I booster pump will lower the tds quite a bit, softner also helps, and by the way if using a sofner dont just flush one salt through it try 3 or 4 slowly it gives better results IMO.

The only time a softener would make the TDS high is if there is still a saline solution produced when regenerating the softening resin. You MUST make sure you give it time for the salt solution to be totally removed. Make sure the softener IS NOT connected to the van/RO system while you are regenerating the resin. Good advice from Ian as well about filling the salt vessel 2 or 3 times each time you regenerate your softening resin.

A decent booster pump for a 40 inch RO is around £200.00.

I am really suspecting very low water pressure for you only to get down to 60 TDS.

Also if you are only filling up a couple of times a week disconnect the inlet to your DI and run your RO output water to drain for 10 to 15 mins and then hook up to your DI again. You will be getting TDS creep into the RO and when you first "fire it up" the output reading will be high.

cheers for advice its hitting about 50 now think i can live with that for a while rather than £200 for a pump. Im guessing the low pressure aint helping to reduce the tds.
