Done a job today and neighbour came and asked if I could clean a rug (after I'd put all the kit away) so said I'd take it home and get it back to her.

She told me the dog had urinated on it this morning, on closer inspection there are a couple of patches where the surface looks to have changed colour, as the rug was dry by now I'm not sure if this is  from the urine or pre exisiting, could urine take out the colour?

I've checked to see if the colours are stable and they seem fine.

Done tests on a fibre:

It floated
 
Had a smell of burning hair and went to a kind of ash at the end when burnt. So I figure wool / polyprop mix?

Should I be ok HWE cleaning this item?

I have attached some pictures any advice on cleaning greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Yes you will be ok to clean this rug with HWE. As for the urine, if its been there sometime if the fibre is a wool mix like you suspect then the damage will be permanent as the colour will have been stripped from the fibre due to the high PH of the urine.

Most urine has a ph value of 5.5-7 on healthy animals or people (if memory serves me right) the ammonia affects the colour of the item. Does the rug still smell?

If so you need to emerse the affected area as to rinse the contaminate out and then apply a disinfectant.

Cleaning looks straight forward but if it's one of your first ones speed dry to be on the safe side.

Shaun if I dont have facility to immerse will a very thorough extraction suffice? I use a wonder wand with a powerflite 500psi porty.

The back is still damp where the dog urinated, is speed of the essence in this case to prevent permenant damage.

After further inspection the part thats discouloured must be from previous damage as its not in the same area as where the backing is still damp.

what products would you recomend.

I would get the hose pipe on it and thoroughly rinse it through then let it drip dry for a while then extract after that there are a few urine contamination treatments on the market prochem urine neutraliser being one.

Allow a long dwell time then clean.

Drying is the longest bit so after hose piping it then suck water out and try hanging it up somewhere, it's good weather for rugs at the moment.

Face it away from the sun though or the colour may fade

From the pic of the backing bear in mind it may be hinding a glue or latex holding it together, in which case immersion clean may cause it to fall apart, especially with pee.

Although not ideal you could try treat fron and back with neutraliser then a bacteriacide/deoderiser and see how that goes.

Paul it looks like a bonded wool rug. If it has urine I saturate clean or immerse clean these. You can do a few tricks after the clean to the urine stain to help reduce it after it had dried.
Clean it first as alot of the time they dry ok. If the area is lighter were the urine stain is then its a trick with dyes to recolour, if its slightly darker you may be able to reduce using sodium metabisulphate. But if your new to this dont experiment on customers rug. Go and buy a knackered one from a car boot and have a play with that.

First time I've used this method and whilst there is still some signs of the urine stains....what a result.
Two rugs quite trashed so took them away to do the evil deed away from customers eyes.
Out on the decking, real big hosing down, apply solution, scrub in, leave for 10 minutes and hang over the fence to rinse.
Taken 2 days to dry out but customer's going to be happy as they look so much better and smell fresh, unlike if you were to HWE which always seems to leave a damp wollen smell.
