New customer on someone else's "patch"?
« on: June 24, 2008, 06:31:52 pm »
If you were recommended by an existing client to go to a new customer and you went there and a window cleaner saw you and came up and said "This is my patch."

How would you respond?

It's a game of three halves!

I would tell him to pull his head out his arse the same thing i said when someone once said that to me, then change my pants through wetting them with laughter.

This patches lark seems to be a northern thing. I can't remember reading on here anyone speaking up for patches, from anywhere else in the uk.

It's hard to say unless it happens. But i do think it is out of order to claim an area is your patch.
This is the 21st century and people are too clued up nowadays to generally be swayed by anyone who tells us what we can and can't do.
Working with people is better than working against, so if anyone wants to 'own' a patch they could achieve it through customer loyalty and swapping the odd job with matey, to make both your lives easier.
Telling someone they cannot trade an area is fighting talk. Short-sighted in my opinion.  ???

Funny how those who believe so strongly about patches existing dont comment on this topic but say things like "people against the patch system are to tight to dip into thier pockets to buy work and just want to pick it up for nothing"

many years ago I had experience of this, a lad who was working for me had another window cleaner come up to him and give him some serious grief over the fact he was working his 'patch', even had this huge customer come out to support him!

He tried to approach my worker again, this time I was close by, and interjected, telling said window cleaner that if he had a problem I was the one to approach, not my employee....he smiled nicely (though a rather fixed grin) and backed down (make of that what you wish!)

Just the other day a fellow forum member I was chatting to in the local high street (not Tosh or Squeaky) told me of another local window cleaner who aggressively confronted a young guy who was touting up his round and told him to basically go away because he was touting his 'patch'.

So, so wrong, if 'J' had tried it with me I'd have...er, well, you know, smiled sweetly...I'm afraid I wouldn't have been very professional :-\

The fellow forum member gave good advice to his colleague, basically telling him - if approached - to say that he knew where he lived and would contact the police because of his threatening behavior.

I'm a mod, so I can't say openly what I'd have done...bad form, what!

Just tell him that you have been asked to call at number 12 or whatever as they do not have a window cleaner. Get friendly and work with not against ;D

I had this all the time when I started.. I lost the rag with th last guy, he told me I had better hope I never met him and his mate. I said 'tell me here you two are right this second and I will be over there in a minute' Reply - 'Couldn't do that, mate'

I chased another guy down the street that had threatned my wife over the phone. Turned out he lived on the street and didn't clean it. Wrong guy, he was really good about it though. I was just glad I hadn't managed to catch him.
