Still using alot of resin??
« on: June 23, 2008, 08:35:57 pm »
im running a 40inch ro system and the tds seems to start rising after about 3 weeks only even after adding a water softener? Ive been using the water softener now for a few weeks it dont seem to be making alot of difference to be honest. Throwing away resin every month is getting a bit expensive. Is my ro failing? Is this normal. (PURE FREEDOM 40inch ro 8 months old). And im only using around 1000 lts a week. ??? Any ideas.

Use 2 Di's, one to pr-filter the other this will give you maximum efficiency from your resin. Oh, & don't use purolite resin, try dowex. ;)

not sure what my pressure but is takes around 7 hrs to fill 500lt tank tds is around 450. and yes i have been using dowex resin. bit cheesed off spent nearly£200 on softener kit it aint made any difference but suppose it will prolong ro life. How long does using two di vessels last surely it just double the life but you use twice the resin??? And how much are the boosters??

I fill 650 in 4.5 max my tap pressure is quite good I guess, with boster thats 2.5 hours max.

2 di's lasts a lot long a lot more than double.

call me 07788 732 789 I will have a chat about it, I was in same boat I did ask for too, and went and got them myself and it really does make a difference, you sound like me when I started.

See that resin you keep throwing away, with 2 DI's you would instead use it to pre-filter your new resin, & so on & so on. ;)

Tony,

He is using Dowex!!! ;D Only kidding.

Tatman,

Could you let us know what your TDS after RO is, and what size is your di vessel. I'd be interested to know as there is something in the proccess effecting the resin.

Water softner does ot prolong the life of the resin, it only prolongs the RO membrane.

Thanks

Doug

Tatman,

What is the Input TDS of your water?
What is the Input Pressure of your water?
What is the output TDS of your RO before the DI?
Do you flush your membrane regularly?

Ps just a thought Tatman.

How many times do you fill and empty your salt before it is regenerated?
Why oh Why did he spell my name as bod & not bob on my wedding invites.

No wonder why you are going through so much resin, you TDS should be a lot, lot lower.

Water softener only takes away Cations in the water and is only required if you have very high Cation content in the water. Cations and Anions need to be removed from the water hence R/O and then MB resin if required.

You may be wasting a lot of money on water softener for nothing!!!

i refill salt vessel at every fill and regen before connecting to van. Then run through softener vessel to van. . Yea im wondering if the softener kit was a waste of time myself ::)

Sorry for not getting back sooner.  Your input TDS is high but workable with.  Your input pressure sounds very low as a 4040 at this time of year should be producing about twice that much product in 7 hours.  TDS from RO is ridiculously high as it means you  have a rejection rate of only 80%.  I would suspect an inferior quality membrane.

There are ways to improve your output TDS and your production rate. One, is to add a booster pump.  Something like a Shurflo 160 psi would probably give you double the production rate and would lower your output TDS (as long as your membrane is not wrecked).  The other, is to fit a different kind of membrane.  Two types come to mind, one that works down to 50 psi input and has a very high production rate, the other is one that works all the way down to 15 psi whilst still producing a good amount of water.
Best thing is to let Pure Freedom try and sort you out. If that fails, get back to us.

My personal thoughts are that water softeners can be a waste of time.  I feel it's better to flush more regularly and have a slightly higher waste ratio and not worry about water softening (not all will agree with me though).

If you are only using 1,000 litres a week, your water softener may add to your problems.
The fact is in this warm weather you need to make sure your membrane doesn't dry out.

May be better to use your filters little and often than to let them idle and dry?
