Fishing Pole Section Repairs
« on: June 12, 2008, 06:07:53 pm »
Hi fella`s,just wondered what some of you do when one(or more ! )
Of your fishing pole sections splinter and break on you.?
One end the splinters goes up the section nearly 12 inches, the other
End about 3 inches.Took it to my local fishing supplies place and
They say it`s past repair by us,try some `gaffer`or duck tape and wrap
It to perhaps `beef `it up a little.I did this,and it has improved,but I
Can`t see it lasting too long at all.Just wondered if expander foam
Would be any good.If not, what can members suggest? It`s glass fiber,
Not carbon fiber.Lightweight Bentley brush,15 foot height,could`nt
Believe it really.Hope for replies,thanks.

There`s a place in scotland that do it,i think they do for Gardiners. When there repaired there better and stronger than they were when they were new,i`ll dig out the web address if not Alex knows it.

We had a top section trodden on - made a right mess of it!!

Taped the section up - filled with expandable foam and then taped an outer sleeve - alloy over the section - it is bomb proof now!!!

Hi Rob,so after the expander foam has set and `cured`you take the
Insulation tape off? I might be reading your original mail wrong.
First you put tape on,then the expander foam, then some more tape?
Thanks.

We taped it up first - make sure you get it to as good as the original shape as you can - then put the foam in both ends.

When it set we left the tape on and just got an old alloy pole and cut a section and taped this top and bottom to the repair ( so it surrounded it and protected it and gave it extra rigidity).

Thanks Rob,I`m gonna get on with this, this weekend.
Like Karl Robinson say`s,with expander foam, when
It`s done the sections can`t be stored inside each other
But ya cant have everything I guess.I`ll vote for anything
That will `beef up`a fishing pole.

From the Diyforum-

I agree with the shop a section of a glass fibre is probably not worth the hastle of reparing it- your timewise, so replace.

Foam will not go off in any void, - ever. It needs oxegen and water to set. It may bubble ok but once the ends start to coagulate it creates a self sealing vacuum, the centre will start to revert back to their parts ie. two liquids. No matter how long you leave them once they have started to split back to basics they will never re-set as a foam. There are specifically designed foams that will set in a void but application is a science.

Try stuffing the void with kleenex and then over coating with basic glass fibre as matt suggested and afterwards removing the tissue.
Or buy another pole for £15  :)

I have some "old" urethanes that also partially set but most of the newer ones dont set. They do form a crust at the edges/ends but not always in the centre.
Whats the make of yours ?
The only way to "see" if they have set instead of just building up pressure is to cut the pole up and inspect,- you will  find a hollow ? Have you tried  using see through plastic tubes that the c/f sections are transported in or maybe asking Dow Corning USA ?

3-6" by 1" diameter will go off but 3ft lengths wont sp the other way ios to build up small sections to allow the air to get in.

This afternoon I phoned the shop where I bought my poles.
They keep getting that model in stock, and have one now.
At £15 a go I`m getting it next week! The remaining sections
Will do as spares.I`m aso thinking of `blocking` internally
Where the sections join with whatever.I know then the sections
Could`nt be stored inside each other, but if it really strengthened
A pole up it would be worth it I recon.Invest in an Unger Carbon
Tech carry bag for transportation etc.

P.S. when I say `blocking`, I don`t mean polyfilla,but perhaps a
Tapered cone solid made from perhaps wood.it would I guess be
Made up on a lathe. What do members think ? thanks

Got to agree with Rob,it`s not 24 hours yet since I applied the
Expander foam, which is the overall time for `curing`.
So it will still be gaining strenth.Just tried it now and it`s
Really strengthened and `beefed`up the section. It`s certainly
I feel a good option.See how things go next week working
With it.
