Rug cleaning advice
« on: June 11, 2008, 02:16:11 pm »
I have been asked to clean a rug for a customer, while I am cleaning the stairs.

It is a 100% wool Indian hand-knotted cream, long shaggy pile.

Is this cleanable using pre-spray and extraction or should I walk away ?

Hi Steve

If its a bog standard indian hand made then it will be fine. Usually green and cream pattern and made of wool. They normally clean absolutely fine, no prob's. Just dont go too high on the ph.

When you say shaggy pile do you mean longer than say an inch? I havent seen a long shag pile indian as yet, but I could be wrong :-\

I would say the tufts are about an inch, I should have taken a photo - but definately Indian according to the label on the back.

I would have said I don't do rugs on site, especially ones like this. I will do a few tests to see what cleaning methods would be appropriate and what results are likely and give you a price.

I would then rush home, take a pic and post it on here for some expert advice. ;D

Worst case is you ring her and say LM method best but results won't be amazing.

I reckon though you are best to immersion clean it, but drying is the problem.

Bit of a dead giveaway the label ;D

Immerse it or HWE is fine. Dont worry about LM Steve as the results wont be as good.

HWE will be fine,Good pre-vac, make sure you dont use anything too high PH otherwise you risk the chance of browning, my choice would be PSG pre-spray and rinse with fabric & Fibre rinse. Leave it outside to speed up drying time or use airmover. just clean like you would any other 100% wool carpet.
