Dont know why anyone would willingly put up with the abuse that is sometimes on here !   There are some really unhappy people , who just like to come on here , and pull people to pieces  ???   Remember is it easier to pull down than to build up  ;)  Sometimes when you are feeling unsure or a bit fed up , a few kind words from the guys on here can make your day  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I think it's important to have someone unbiased, unconnected to any supplier & willing to respect (but not necessarily agree with) other peoples perspectives as an alternative view.

Sorry if my second post on this thread caused concern - especially with PJ.

I do not know The Shiner (Paul) and I am only aware of him from how he conducts himself on this board throughout many posts.

I have gleaned that although he has had a jw background and that he has never become one himself, the way he conducts himself in religious (and other) threads shows me that he is even handed.

What do you want? A super-staunch jw who deletes Xmas Tip threads or an anti-jw who wades in and closes down posters who offer comfort to the bereaved from their belief system? There are a proportion of jw's on this board and I am sure they do not want favouritism or prejudice. Does it matter what religion a moderator is - not to me - it was simply ONE reason I felt he would be good at the job.

I simply think the way the Shiner conducts himself on this board - not polarising in views towards wfp and trad. topics, not pouring scorn on members choices - window cleaning, holidays, cars, belief systems etc etc etc. - would make him a good moderator.

If there is more than one moderator chosen, then fine.
It's a game of three halves!

It's funny how this thread has gone. I (don't) wonder if it would have gone the same if shiner was a catholic.  ;D
I also wondered what malc was getting at in his post. Thanks pj for mentioning it, i was itching for the answer.  :)
I personally don't think the background of a moderator would have any bearing on them being able to do a great job. This is because CIU is too public and i couldn't see anything being slipped in without someone knowing about it and commenting. The same goes with the suppliers who are long term members. If it is given to them and they are no good for the role then they could get it taken away. I do think having 3 or 4 new mods would keep the irrelevance down to a minimum as they could nip things in the bud.
So add squeaky, tennet and discount to the list.

LOL

don't you think they would make good moderators?
OK, discount might lock threads that disagree with him. After he has written the final reply. Tennet might lock trad threads unless it could be done without the use of a ladder. And squeaky might ban tosh and ....... well ban tosh really.  :o
But, they have thick skins and won't shirk from redirecting a thread or more. They are vocal and express themselves clearly and to the point and they enjoy a wind up as much if not more than most. Could also nominate macmac and groundhog.

You have me about right there Malc inasmuch that I do believe in fairness.  I try to take the view that with all the gaffes I've made at different times in my life, who the heck am I to be judgemental towards others.  I think that having gradually to have learned a degree of self acceptance has helped me to accept others.  I would like to correct one part of your post though if I may.  I was brought up in the JW faith from age 4 or 5 until I walked away when I was 16.  I was never kicked out because I was never baptised so am not subject to the shunning that can go on (though if an individual chooses to shun then that is their choice).  Adapting to a non religious life was very difficult and there were many traumas - chiefly of my own making.  But I had to be true to myself.  If I don't believe something I can't pay lip service to it just hanging around due to fearing the consequences of leaving.  For me that would just feel totally dishonest.
Please note that I am not knocking anyone's beliefs here.  I'm just saying that it didn't feel right for me.  In fact, I needed psychotherapy to help me through the difficulties.  I am not laying all my problems at the door of the JWs.  I'm very aware that many of my difficulties were family issues though the line can be blurred.  Also, I'm not particularly good at coping with change and therefore my own inner weaknesses made a large contribution too.
Although some would undoubtedly view me as a sinner, "oppressive wolf", evildoer etc etc, I do endeavour to treat people OK.  I would also like to say that it wasn't all bad.  Some of the things I was brought up with gave me a basis to recover.

Although I am not particularly happy with labelling myself, I class myself as an atheist.  I am not totally happy with labels because a human being gradually changes in outlook with the passing of the years so whatever I am now, need not be the way I will view things in years to come.

Way off topic.

It will end up turning into an argument

well said Art! wheres a mod when you need one? ;D actually Art would make a good mod...i vote for Art!!!! ;D ;D

I vote for Luke   ;D

I voted for you already Paul (shiner) but i think i'll change my mind now to Luke aswell.

If he wants to be Scottish he has just shot up in my estimation  :D

I always seem to get along fine with Scots myself - when I can understand what they're saying   ;D

It's been made abundantly clear that what you think is fair, any criteria you suggest for choosing, any notion of democracy or accountability you may have.......None of it matters.

It's a closed shop.

Peculiarly, i think if I mended my ways I think they probably would have me.

I'll tell you what lads wouldn't it be nice if Mike deigned to post. Even if it was only to tell me to shut up. I would ask him:

1. If two or three new mods are needed, why can't we have them?

2.With all these various methods and suggestions flying about what is wrong with taking on board some of what forum members are saying?

3. What's wrong with a vote?

4. Out of noseyness how many people have applied?

I nominate Shiner for moderator, as he's a fair person. Good luck to him if he wants and gets it, and is prepared to sacrifice his social life.
