Found this question on a City and Guilds exam paper, have amended the earnings. One to think about 

To make a living as a self-employed window cleaner, the young man thinks he
will need to earn £20 000 in a year. He plans to work a 40-hour week with
4 weeks paid holiday in a year. He estimates that
• one tenth of his 40-hour week will be taken up with activities that he will
not be able to charge for
• due to the weather, he will only be able to clean windows for 35% of the
remaining working week
c Calculate how much income per hour the young man needs if he is to make
a living as a self-employed window cleaner.

35% can't be right. Do you mean 75%?

Or do you mean he wont be able to work 35% of the time?

Why have you amended the earnings is it an old paper? What was the figure given?

What course was the question for, business studies?

Okay but he's got the question wrong.

forty hours less a tenth is thirty six hours times forty eight weeks.equals 1728 .
Times this by 35% for actual hours worked is.604,8hours to earn twentyk is £33.0687.

So you were very close Ewan.

i worked it out at £16.53 per hour.

If the mod question were an exam question the answer is that more mods are needed.The problem is that the current mods, excellent though they are, covett their powers too jealousy.

Yes squeaky could do the job, why not? I wouldn't have to agree with all his decisions, but I don't agree with all the decisions now.

There is also a place for a guest, or an anonymous mod (Mr boxall would obviously know who they were). This guest mod could be awarded to people who make outstanding posts (think Jeff). And why shouldn't Tennant have a pop too?

All these people add interest and value to the forum (in their own way).

yes i think that's right. I didn't read the question correctly. I thought he lost 35% of the time due to weather. Not worked 35% of time.

As for being a mod, having to trawl through all the posts would do my head in.
I like being a member only. This way i look only for the posts that interest me.

No, The scots have a licensing system. You can not be a window cleaner in scotland without a license from the relevant local authority.

Of course to get a licence their is an exam. This is a sample question.

In a few years you will have to sit an exam like this if licencing comes to us

Theirs no exam to be licenced you pay your money show your insurance and get police checked definately no exam

no i took 40 /10 =4 that leaves 36-65% =12.6 x48=604.8then divide 20000 by 604.8=33.06878 blah round that up to33.07

I had a Polish guy working for me.
His contract said he would earn £20k a year
He earnt just over that in 10 months (he then left)
His average week was 38 hours
He was doing about £24/hour for us
His pay worked out at about £12/hour
He got paid his full holiday entitlement

Does that confuse matters?
