I was also told by a sales manager for a leasing company, that some leasing companies will send you a bill for £600 or so for repairs needed on the van, when the van needs no such repairs.

Ive had contract hire and leased cars in the past, not a van. With contract hire you have to be carefull with damage ect, stone chips and the odd wheel scuff are classed as general wear and tear, but if you have dents and lots of scratches then you will be liable for the cost of the repairs. With lease balloon payment, you are the one that is responsable to sell the vehicle and pay the final figure to the lease/finance company. So it is in your interest that the vehicle is in good condition to be able to get as much for the vehicle when you sell or part exchange it.

The main problem with leasing is the balloon payment at the end of the contract, this can run into thousands so beware.
It's no problem at all, you either sell the van and pay it, or get another new one and carry on.

I've got a balloon payment of £4900, but when that's due my van will be worth £5,500-£6000.

If I do it after 3 years instead of 4 it'll be £7000.
Van will be worth about £7500-£8000.

Don't worry about balloon payments!  ;)
worth £7500-8000 in your dreams, that might tell you that but in reality you`ll be extremley lucky.

That is how they make up their money. Its a bit of an on going scam apparantly. And hire car companies are the same, you hire a car, when you take it back they find some tiny little fault and you lose your deposit.

We got caught at Newcastle Airport last year over a cracked rear light. A friend of mine was badly stung by a car hire company in South Harrow about the same time. He went ballistic, took it up with the credit card company and even went to Trading Standards. They said they were aware of the company and there had been a lot of complaints but there wasn't much they could do because he had signed an agreement giving them the right to do it.

If you don't have the money up front i would recommend interest free monthly payments a few manufacturers are doing this at the moment or a personal low interest loan no need for a buisnesss loan, obviously the above do not have the tax benefits but at least you own the van at the end of the term. Its similar to renting or buying a house, if you rent its dead money. You also know what you are paying each month and do not have to worry about any final large payment or damages.

They haven't told me that. I know from looking about at used ones.

What do you think I am, some bloody gullible idiot? ::)

You would have been so much better off buying a van for that price, after the term you could have still kept the van for another few years and you would still have got roughly the same as they will give you for it after 3 years for a deposit on another one.Say they give you 7k which they won`t as an allowance towards another one your payments will be the same again over 3 years,if you had purchased it in effect you would have nothing to pay for 2 years if you`d had kept it for 5 years after outright purchase, what i`m trying to say is the allowance they will give you after 5 years dosen`t differ much from 3 years. At least by buying one when you`ve paid for it if it`s still in good condition you have no payments to meet until you deciede to chop it in again. They`ll only be kind to you if you keep renewing every 3 years or whatever term you have them at,i`m not putting you down Squeaky i`m just saying i`ve looked into this and HP is the way to go unless you kill your vans.
