Urgent help with TDS problems
« on: April 12, 2008, 09:30:02 am »
I have a Ionics pro 6, that as most of you now just got in March. I was told when I got it to do a salt back wash everynight and a weekly backwash once per week. I have done this, but obviously being new havent used a full tank everyday. I have been checking my outgoing TDS with the inbuilt machine (waiting for a handheld arriving) The other day my TDS was showing 042, so I phoned ailesbury services (Ionic dealer in Ireland) and he said I was probably using too much salt and they are now recomending twice a week only, he advised me to let the tank run down completely. I did this and refilled, did a weekly backwah, but did not use any salt the reading is 056 now (had pump on when checking readings). I have the following questions: Could the inbuilt TDS machine be broken? and do you think I should wait till my handheld arrives MOnday or Tuesday before panicking? or does anybody know anything that I might be doing wrong or could do to fix this problem? Sorry to be a pain guys but would really appreciate some help on this.

In-lines aren't very reliable, wait till your hand held comes.

before you panic try cleaning your own windows withtds of 56 and see what they turn out like , you could allso swap the battery in the inline tds meter as that could be getting flat .
where theres muck theres money

Ive carried on cleaning custies as getting great results, which makes me think it must be the inline tds. My hand held should be here Mon/Tues so I'll give it another go then.

If you are anywhere near bedford pop round and I will test your water with my hand held  :)

Jimmy, you paid ionics a premium price, take it around to them to have a look at, surely this is why you paid that premium for the system, customer care and all that

I know your right, spoke to them on Friday and they said to check with the hand held which wont come until Mon/Tues but if its still the same I will be taking it back for them to look at, trouble is Ive got a 3 and a half hour drive to Dublin, if I have to do that. But if I have, to I will. Need to get it right, could be something I'm doing due to my inexperience, but do't think so, so once Ive checked the hand held if its still the same I'm sure I'll be heading to Dublin next week.

good luck

you would have to hope they will help you out, then again, it would have been nice of them to give you a simple to follow instructions

Funny you should say that, but I got no written instructions at all, just verbal, to be fair they did spend a lot of time with me and told me to ring night or day if I was unsure of anything. But if I'd have had simple written instuctions/manual I wouldn't have had to phone at all, as it was when I got home and actually started using the system I forgot some of the verbal instuctions - so had to ring. I think they assume most people have had some experience and this is not always the case, apart from a WFP course with Ionics I Knew nothing! (and still not much more  ;D ;D ;D)

When i got my system from purefreedom that showed me around the full system and i then got a instructions manual telling you everything, if you get air blocks, checking system, how often to change certain items etc etc, handy to have especially when your tired from a long journey and not fully awake from the long drive youve had to do to get to them, hope you get it sorted mate.

The inline meters are nothing more than decoration, they are no where near as reliable as a hand held meter.

All inline meters do is leak, they require a T peice in order to be fitted in most cases if you have a more reliable hand held why bother, when i change tanks in a week or so mines going in the bin.

Is your high tds what comes out of the RO or when water has passed through colour change resin?

If I understand system correctly one resin changes colur when tds goes over 030 and the other when it goes over 000. Yours maybe different to this, but if the resin has not changed colour you should have a reading around 000.

I'm still new to all this, but should anything have changed colour in 3 weeks? Its not like I even have a full round of custies. I'll let you know as soon as I get the hand held what the outcome is, I'm just preying its not a trip to Dublin...

I personally have 2 hand helds, 1 I use all the timer and the other I check water once a week just to be sure the other is working as it should.

better to be safe than spotty  ;)

No the resin shouldn't have changed colour in 3 weeks. Assuming it has not then your tds should be 000. Not clear what water the inline meter reads. does it just read water after it has come out of the RO, before it goes through the resin filters.

You could have a high tds from the RO but the resin would bring it down to 000. If you have a high tds from the RO it would mean you going through more resin, so best to address.
