Good start to the Bank Holiday
« on: March 20, 2008, 02:34:42 pm »
Hi all,

Rushed like crazy earlier on in the week, so i could have the easter weekend off and go back to work on Tues.

Managed to finished all my work by Weds afternoon so decided to go leafletting today. Picked up a front guttering and window clean for £45. The same customer then wants her front windows done monthly for £7. Then a nice extended cottage with huge conservatory for £40 every two months.

So that was a nice £85 bonus before the weekend began.

Anyone else had a bit of luck over the last few days.

I also have been working hard to get all my work done and was supposed to be finished yesterday dinnertime but ended up with extras and even had to work an hour today and the customer today asked for business cards as her friends all need a window cleaner and all have large houses at £30+so nice earner there all from no canvassing

Not sure about luck because this is what van signage is for.  Was just about to start the engine yesterday when my mobile rang.  It was from a guy who had driven past my van a few minutes beforehand.  He lived a mile down the road and wanted a quote.  Turned out to be a £30 job every six weeks so and it will be £75 twice a year when I do some extras.  So £330 a year* from one new job.  Not spectacular but repeat that a few times and they are nice additions to the business.

*Although I do six weekly, in reality, by the time I take a holiday, get sick a few days, or just generally get a bit behind occasionally, I call it 8 visits a year.

I've got around £1000 worth of guttering and fascia clean and cannot get around to do it. May think about employing someone to do just that, if I can get the gutter vac to work :( :(

Wow Lance, we were doing the same (leafletting) today, and got 3 new custies, but not at the same price as yours (£39 alltogether). Great minds think alike...........  ;)

Hello Lance,
I am not in a position to pick & choose yet, or to narrow it down to a compact round, so we are here, there & everywhere. Most of our work is in St Andrews Ridge, next to that Woodhall Park, then Old Walcot. The rest is bits & pieces spread here & there.
We have the start of a decent round in Devizes as well, as we bought a commercial & then a domestic round, but we have picked up quite a lot on the back of it, have found it easier to build up there than in Swindon.... ???
Where do you cover?

Mainly West Swindon with quite a bit also in North Swindon. Don't cover any of the new estates off of Thamedown Drive though.

Also don't go anywhere near Walcot and Old Town areas. Apart from about ten jobs off of Valleyside down the bottom of Kingshill.

I'm assuming you're just setting up with wfp or have you been window cleaning long???

Regards,
lance

We started last Oct, straight in with both feet with an Ionics Thermapure WFP system. With hindsight I would have done everything different, would have started part time trad, built up the round, then gone for it full time.
My brother & I were fed up of warehouse work......... did'nt realise how long it would take to build up a round...... we know now though  ;)
Swindon seems well wrapped up, which is why we will be concentrating on Devizes over the next few weeks.
Did it take you long to build up? Are you WFP?

Dale, how nice to read such an honest refreshing post. So you too haven't found "loads of work out there". I started in much the same way and was suprised at how long it takes to get to a full round (i'm not there yet) so with two of you you obviously need twice the amount. You HAVE to take on pretty much anything to start just to get a wage which is the worst part and not being able to drop the wasters to start with. Good luck.

It took me over a year to get to the point where I didn't need to canvass and it took me two years before I considered that I had a pretty full round - much of it what I would now consider to be underpriced.  The workload climbed sharply in the second year on the back of referrals from the first year.  After about 5 years, I gave away most of the work I got in the first year.  I reckon I must have cleaned more windows in Handcross (Sussex) than any other W/C but it wasn't much good if I was overloaded with work and that was the most badly underpriced lot I had.  Not moaning.  Was grateful for it at the time as it got me started.

Thanks DJW & Shiner  ;D.
You know the reality of it all is that if I had logged onto this site last summer, I would be in a different world now. I would have listened & learned, and have gone for the gradual build up.
Yeah this first year is a tough one for sure, but we are slowly getting there...... think we will be like you Shiner (hopefully), will be more like 2yrs to get a full round.
DJW - yeah because there is 2 of us the pressure is on for sure, but it's a laugh a lot of the time. Never worked with bruv before.... he is quite mad I have now found out  ;D.
I am sure we will be on here bragging about how much we earn..... in 2010  ;)
