employing your wife
« on: December 13, 2004, 09:12:02 pm »
as a sole trader is it legal to employ your wife , if it is ,does this mean i have to pay her N.I Contributions.
I only intend to employ her part time and no more than 20 hours per week.
Theoritically ? this could be a disaster waiting to happen, but i dont intend for her to be with me the whole time, cheers for any advice.

hi there,

many people will employ their partners for tax purposes, ie they will pay them, their tax allowance.

you do need to inform the inland revenue so that they can issue a a PAYE referemce for you, so as to process the payroll.

however if you employ your partner as a partner in the business you should be able to treat their earnings as drawings ie tax dealt with as yours is.

this might be a little confusing.  but is intended to help.

regards

martin

He won't have to kiss her goodbye in the morning tho  ;D

My Mrs has been on the cards for the last 3 years, earning approx £7k a year,  doing admin etc. Works a treat.

Right, make her a partner in the business so you go from a sole trader to a partnership. That way you have your own tax allowance and hers too which in this up coming tax year (2013/14) will be just over £8000 each.

She doesnt have to technically do anything other than if anything comes about it you say she does admin etc

Surely its just as easy to "pay" her the £8 grand and put it as an expense... save faffing around with partnerships etc?
