Train Carriage Cleaning
« on: March 06, 2008, 07:55:56 pm »
Hi, Please can anyone help. I have been offered a contract cleaning train carriages at night. This is a first for my company as it is a general contract clean and we specialise in carpet and Upholstery cleaning. Does anyone have any experience of this type of cleaning. Specifically I am looking for advice on:-
1) Rates of pay for general cleaning staff (Night time, possibly from 10pm to 4.30am)
2) Any major pitfalls to be aware of with train cleaning.
3) And of course the usual question of charge on costs. ie what could I reasonably expect to charge per hour for the service.
4) And lastly with consumables such as Toilet roll, what would a fair mark up be for me to add on to pass on to my customer.

If anyone could Help I would be very grateful. Thanks Os

1&3. check out what the local wage rate is. I used to work for a company that did train cleaning. Night rate was £7.50 per hour. What to charge, work out the hourly rate for total hours to be worked plus holidays, add NI, also will be bank holiday and sunday working where rates may be different. Our rate at that time (10 years ago was £18.00 per hour.

4. Always add consumables as an extra and charge on an as supplied basis. Our consumables were marked up at 34%.

2. Power is usually an issue as the operators do not always put it on.  Most of the work is carried out at the sidings so you will need PTS - Personal Track Safety Training
