Leaking hose reel (a simple mistake)

I was talking to a mate today while he was messing around with his hose reel, I asked what the problem was and he told me that the thing kept leaking even with the new fittings he has just that minute fitted.

I asked if he had put any PTFE Tape on and his reply was its a waste of time because every time he put it on it never stopped the leak.

In the back of my mind I had a little suspicion, so asked him to put some PTFE tape on so I could see the problem, OK he's says and I watched as he put the tape on and screw the fitting back on, when he had finished and went to switch his pump on, I told him it was going to leak, can anyone tell me why I was sure it was going to leak and it did when he turned his pump on.

Before I left him, we had cured the problem and his reel is now leak free.

He wound the PTFE against the thread instead of in the same direction as it?

well com on jeff tell  us as mine is leaking but its from the mail to the connector from the hose from the pump outlet to the reel  ???

I've just been out and done mine. Although you can see from the other post the reason is not because it leaks, but because it comes undone.

I haven't pressured it up yet, and even then it has to get hot, and then I have to unwind at speed. I hope i've done it right.

Another thing i have to do with with mine is bungee rope it so the hose is in a direct line to the reel. Anything else and it developes torque that can unscrew it at the heater end.

He put the tape on the hose and not the thread, am i correct ??

He was using sellotape and not ptfe tape  ;)
I really dont have a clue tell us all Jeff i will wait here on the edge of my seat till i know

He wont tell us untill people stop posting. But the answer has to be logical and simple.
Some of the serious answers have been laughable.

The theory of ptfe is it gets in thread and fills any space up.

Sorry Guy's I had to shoot out for a while.

Matt was right,  ;)  if you wind the PTFE tape in the opposite direction of the thread, then when you screw on your connector it un-winds the PTFE Tape and creates voids in the thread and so the leaks,

I also noticed he was left handed and wound it the way a right handed person would.

So just a little tip for when you put on PTFE Tape, always follow the direction of the thread.

If you only wind it around once, it is neither with or against the thread.Even on more turns it shouldn't make any difference.

But I have to agree that if you rumple it or unwind it as you thread on then yes...


I haven't got any experience by the way....

The thing is? even one single layer of Tape will leave the edge of the tape on top and facing the wrong way, as soon as you begin to screw on your fitting, the chances of you catching the edge of the tape along the thread increase 10 fold, this guy had 4 attempts of putting on PTFE tape and each time it leaked so he gave up useing it, once in the right direction and no leaks, is it worth the hassle I ask???

how people can put on ptfe tape wrong baffles me, if enough is put on it does the job wrong or right way on the thread it needs to be tight thats all, the only void there will be if tape is anti threaded is about 3mm till it fixes, if you have not put enough on it will leak, to much and it will not tighten enough and leak.

Simple really but only if you know how
