God I hate them more by the day. :

I went to file my return online as usual last week, and realised that because I've reinstalled Windows on my hard drive I've lost my ID, password and tax reference.

I phoned up last monday or tuesday (20 days before cut-off) and was told by the unhelpful sods that they'd send the ID to me by post.
It would take 2 to 7 days...
9 days later no sign of it.

Worse still, when I get it I've then got to apply by post for the sodding password, as they have my old e-mail address which is defunct.
That's another 7 days!!!!!

What a bunch of unhelpful clowns.
For god's sake, there's plenty of times you need secure details passing through the internet, why do they insist on sending it???!!!

If I miss the cut-off, they can p-off.
£100? I know I should have done it before now, but it's not my fault they're so slow.

I got an accountant this year,.. best move I ever made. She actually saved me more money than she charged me, claiming back stuff I didn't know I could,.... and it was all easy and stress free. I couldn't recommend it more!

me too, i havent even thought about...well anything, put my earnings, receipts toghether, and having thought anything else of it

yes i do. I use a monthly template and have it added up week by week, with monthly totals at the bottom.
The only trouble with excel i think is that the number of jobs changes each month and i have to delete or add rows. If i had the monthly totals in the same cell each time it would automatically link the values to a yearly expenditure and yearly earning sheets.

i do most of my accounts, then i hand them to my accountant and she looks though them and checks them etc and adds a few things that i can claim for

I actually keep daily records on a spreadsheet.  I use MS Works though.

They actually will owe me £93 on Jan 31.  I will let them keep it though so that I can offset it against the July bill.

  I use a book from WHsmiths, it is called "The Best Small Business Accounts Book In The World", or something like that, it is very good and if you keep it up to date - ie weekly - you only have to transfer the figures into your tax return.

  I ALWAYS have my return filled out and sent back within a fortnight of having recieved it, why do you some of you wait until the last minut??

Have you not got the paper version?  Couldn't you use that?  I think it was last year that I sent mine off by Royal Mail Special Delivery on the 30th January, and the lady in the post office groaned, 'Oh not another one'!

Just send the hard copy off; it's not hard to fill in.

you only need to get them in ontime if you owe tax if not then send them when you can if you owe them nothing you will have the £100 fine wiped off but they forget to tell you that in the anooying advert................ IT DOSENT HAVE TO BE TAXING !!!!!

I wouldn't have deliberately thrown it out, but seeing as I wasn't going to use it, it could have gone anywhere since last April or May...
It's a pain.

Even if they're busy it shouldn't take in excess of 10 days to send me a piece of paper. :

Squeaky don't take this the wrong way. The tax year ended 5 April 2007 so you've had 9 months or so to submit this. With a week to go your scrabbling around for codes, password etc. Think about it

I've always done it in january with no problems.
I had over 20 days to do a half hour job.

They reckon they sent me the information on the 17th.
What a bunch of lying fools.

I still haven't been given what I asked for 18 days ago.
If this isn't done before the 31st they can swivel...and I really mean that.

you cant beat the tax man . i had same problams 2005/2006 year in the end i ended up printing tax return off from there website . its either that or risk a fine . no one likes the tax man but once you mess them around they dont let go .
