Anyone use a Trailer System?
« on: January 21, 2008, 11:44:21 pm »
I'm selling my van and was thinking about getting a trailer instead of another van to save a bit of money, I have a small campervan which I could use to tow it. Does anyone use a trailer and if so how do you manage with it, any tips ect.
Cheers.

I use a Trailer every day and even if I bought my self a van I would keep the trailer for back up.
The only problem I can see for you, is the reversing,  I think it may be difficult to see the trailer, what I would do in your case would be to add a ladder rack so you could see it from the rear window.

Take your trailer to a local council carpark on a Sunday, take a few cones with you and spend an hour or two practicing reversing techniques, you wont master it in a couple of hours but it will give you a general idea of what to expect, skill will only come with practice.
As you approach your custy's always look for turning spots to reduce you having to reverse, you can always unhitch but this will become a pain so try to avoid it.

As for the trailer itself, always go for the braked type, make sure it has a jockey wheel, on the rear have drop legs fitted if there not already, then when you unhitch your trailer, it wont tilt up on you if its unbalanced.

Always spread the weight in the trailer evenly, this will reduce what is known as snaking (side to side movement) if this happens at speed do not apply brakes, take your foot of the Gas and reduce speed until it stops.
Another cause of snaking is uneven tyre pressures being different on each side, keep a check on the tyre pressure.

My first system was a trailer system, and man did I hate it, but then I was no good at reversing

Thanks Andy, I used to tow a trailer a lot when I worked as a builder, so I'm not too worried about reversing it. I think I will get a trailer first and see how it goes, before I sell my van. The only reason I am thinking about this is that I am running three vehicles at the moment, my wifes mini, a campervan and my work van, which is a lot of expense!

Just make sure you keep it secure, someone would love to pinch it off you full of wfp gear.

I have the xtel hybrid pole, its just over 5' when closed so I'm able to keep it locked in my trailer, if you have to  leave it outside and don't have a garage to keep it in, stick a car alarm on it with tilt or a vibration sensor, the battery I use on my alarm is a wheelchair battery it lasts for months on one charge, then I just swap batteries over and charge the next one up.
