Lack of enthusiasm
« on: January 08, 2008, 09:16:08 pm »
I'm sitting here listening to it hammering down on my conservatory roof, i've just seen the forecast and it's aweful. I really need to phone some custys to leave their gates unbolted but i know i'll be wasting my time just got to get through the next couple of months. :(

The good news is that in a couple of weeks there is going to be some filthy glass about. Just can't wait for the spring sunshine to come back like last year.

Dave
What about a wee ladder or pointer in the van so you could unbolt the gates yourself, this would save you tons of hassle with the phone calls mate?
We all in the same boat dude with this weather, i'm having to just get up in the mornings & try & do whatever i can, when i can. i try my best not to clean in rain but sometimes will work in light rain. ;)

Deffo going to get two ladders - short to fit in the van and very light just to save my testicles. I'm thinking of chopping some aluminium step ladders down. I do carry a fold up ladder but it's heavy and fiddly but good for conservatory cleans

I got a realy light small (3steps) stepladder from homebase over 3 years ago & still use it today. it was only 15 quid & it's so handy for allsorts of things.

Funny you should mention that. No, a lot of people have the bolt half way down or even at the bottom, some have a padlock too so i would need two ladders really - up one side and down 'tother.

If you have a lot of gates to get over everyday why not invest in one of those electricians ladders, you can get them in all different sizes and i know a guy that has one,you could litterally scissor it over the gate and then simply just climb over. Most of them seem to to be yellow at the sides and are heavy duty material yet light.

Sometime forecasts are wrong, maybe just have a lazy day tomorow and plan to only do 50% of the work to get you back on track. At least its just starting to get a bit lighter. At least your not on a hospital bed. Who used to say get out of bed and slap yourself- do it. !
Good luck anyway.

This time of year it's just a case of doing what you can when you can. I don't really have the same focus in the summer.

If they are half way down, I lean over from a longish step ladder and use a claw hammer to unbolt.  The hammer is especially useful for the stiffer bolts.  I did see something about someone connecting the hammer to a pole to get to bolts that are even lower.  No good for padlocks of course.

we use crowbars if that problem arises

I had loads of houses with locked access. The days of slipping the bolts are long gone. Its a drag having to remember to phone.
One yeserday, customer you have to phone to leave the gate unlocked (which my wife did ) even so when I turned up gate was still padlocked. Sounds trivial but with the rain and everything it really gets on your nerves.
House after that, a second clean, now has a big "for sale" board in the front garden. So we know why they suddenly phoned me out of the blue to have their windows cleaned a few weeks ago.
Yes, this time of year is a slog.

Yea, this time of year can be a slog, I always, every year, am on edge regarding the weather about now. And to top it all sometimes in really dodgy spells, particularly like this week you have to summon resources that would rather just let you give up and say enoughs enough.
