This day in the year is a real psychological watershed for me. Although the day length doesnt improve noticeably for a good long while its always nice to know you're past the shortest day.

Tomorrow is a longer day than today, thats a nice thought.

Must be spring tomorrow.

Actually it means the start of winter, but who's splitting hairs over the fact that it now starts to produce more daylight hours. 8)

Yes every four or five years the solstice "shortest day" falls on the 22nd of December and 2007 is one of those years!

I wasn't being that cleaver, probably because I'm not.  All though the days get longer the sunrise gets later until about Jan the sixth and then it starts getting earlier.  The sunset gets later faster so to speak.

I'm not bothered though.  Next day of work for me is next Friday.

Simon.

Yes Simon, and at the summers solstice on June 21/22nd it goes the opposite way - the sunset will stretch out even tho the sunrise hardly changes for a couple of weeks.

It's down to whichever pole is facing the sun because of the Earth's tilt.

The trouble with longer days is that its more time fro custies to see if their windows have been cleaned properly.

I wondered at first if it was a reference to the clocks changing at the Spring equinox but it looks like that's March 30th.

On my calendar it shows March 26 as a Wednesday but the last Sunday in March is March 30.
