Clean Start Action - First meeting with UK insurers

True to its July conference promise - action speaks louder than words - the CleanStart Action group has set up the first ever UK cleaning/insurance industry liaison meeting. It starts at 10.00 am on 26th November and will be held at the Association of British Insurers offices at 51 Gresham Street, London. Due to the importance of the meeting, the group has extended an invitation to readers who want to attend.

Working with the top five UK insurers, the first objective is to explore practical and cost-effective solutions to solve the public/employee liability insurance problems faced by every sector in the UK cleaning industry.

The CleanStart group's solution is based on establishing a 'UK Cleaning Industry Insurance Scheme' that would provide realistic and affordable cover for every type and size company/organisation in all sectors.

It is envisaged that it would be based on reconciling the facts presented at the CleanStart conference, namely:

* Equity market investments no longer subsidise liability premiums, so insurance companies have to make liability insurance a stand-alone profit centre
* Companies in fragmented industries, (like the cleaning industry) do not have a strong collective voice to 'make their case heard' loudly enough which means they are more susceptible to larger than average premium increases
* Industries where there are no national agreed standards or methods tend to have a higher claims rate

The CleanStart concept to making a UK Cleaning Industry Insurance a reality is based on:

1: Introduction of industry-agreed legislation/standards/methods of working which establishes a national standard.

2: National standards establish a level operational field which means that as far as insurance companies are concerned, good operating companies/organizations (checked by rolling/continuous audit) are rewarded.

3: National Standards establish a collective voice and collective influence or bargaining power.

4: As insurance and safety are common denominators, they strongly influence virtually every aspect of the UK cleaning industry.

5: A standards-led Cleaning Industry Insurance Scheme, if established through a strong and robust professional organization working on behalf of all the cleaning industry, would be the significant motivator or driver to improving the value and profile of cleaning.
