took out inner ring of vikan 10" bristles good results
« on: November 30, 2007, 05:32:21 pm »
vikan bristles very hard to get splay (unless you use elephants)
much better splay less effort
those centre bristles not neccessary at all
already has an abundance of them after my hacking

those of us using well worn vikans just place them
on the table   do you see oval?
the centre bristles  make you push a lot
even anew one will make you work

get those middle ones out!

imagine a 7 row brush
take out all the brisles exept the outer ring
=big splay   little effort
use 2 rows all the way round  theres more resistance etc etc

im saying the real culprit is centre row
get rid of them

Theory sounds ok, many like the dual trims cannot splay and act as stiff as a wire brush so you only clean with the tips and on filthy glass you can actually see the lines. Might try it with the Bentley.

Dont like  flocked brushes like the Bentley Jik, I personaly think they cause lots of spotting probs although,  because of the increased brush area because of to split ends they float easier on the glass surface but dont seem to scrub as well in heavy dirt- which also gets into the stock.

well dave
i found recently with addis    it wobbles about a lot

theres got to be a definate amount of force behind it for it to splay
anything less than that............its on brush points or else wobbling about

or maybe i ought to drink a few pints less before i start work

Mmm strange that, because i found it splays with next to no pressure and i'm using a carbon fishing pole. Maybe there are two versions about and i have a soft bristle brush. It's definately more splayable than my Gardiners Superlight. Sounds like you might have a stiff one that skips and judders over the glass?

my addis from focus
7 quid with sweeping pole
middle brushes white
ehd brushes black

i used it with fishpole  the higher the pole is up
the more like a maniac youve got to press down for splay

i must have the wrong type

As in other reply try angling the whole head so that all the bristles pint upwards at say 45 and look at the footprint through some glass.

just tried it

its a very heavy scrubbing action using the outermost underside bristles
and thats the only part of the brush used
and i thought splay meant:  place brush parallel to glass and push
all bristles splay out 360 degrees

 ;)
yes when pointing slightly upwards all the bristles become Parallel pointing upwards, the splay is in the side to side scrubbing movent of the brush moving over the glass.

mindblowing!
you suggested it before but i couldnt get my mind around it then
what ive always done is put brush parallel to glass and push
more i push the more splay i got    a 360 degree splay
thought that was the proper way
is it just me or is it a common practice with brush users  i mean the 360?
takes a hell of a lot of pushing and pressing
suffering for nothing

cant wait to try it out

i allways had the Vikan flat on the glass, as its not that a stiff brush it was fine BUT that was with a ali pole

now i use a fishing pole, it might be different

with fishpoles you cant use a vikan   theres no weight behind the brush
but angle the pole 60 degrees   gets great 360 splay
at 90 deg horizontal gets ultimate splay but difficult up+down movement

like jeff said angle the brush right and the pole does all the work
and get maximum scrubbing power

see for yourself..........

put bristles of a brush angled at 45 degrees on the palm of your hand
move the brush forward   feel all those hundreds of needles scratching at the skin

then put brush sqarely on palm and push to splay out bristles
move it like you want to wash the hand
just feel a tickling massaging   nothing doing kind of feeling
