there are alot of rust removers on the market but i find the best ones are hydroflorich acid based , avoid any that are hydrochloric acid based as you will find with these ones they can damage certain materials especially stainles steel, if you just put in your search engine rust removers there are many about and all as good as each other.

Is it rust or a plant food (fertilizer) stain as these can look the same.

phosphoric acid can be found in most toilet cleaners just look under the ingredients, it is best if you leave it on the rust for about ten minutes to soak before washing off

As Trevor has said, is correct, but toilet cleaners might be a weaker soultion, look for an aluminium cleaner, most of these have a higher phosphoric acid content, Tensid do a poultice which might be what you need.

Try looking at stainless steel cleaner from the food industry, they contain phosphoric and are formulated to remove rust marks. Some food grade descalers also contain phosphoric, also found in cola !!!!!

Look for a "Oxalic" cleaner, this will remove rust stains.

Keith,
Becareful with Oxalic acid as you can't really spot clean with it, as you will have brighter/cleaner surface compaired to the rest of the surface.

Keith, this is what can happen if you spot clean with either Ox or Citric acid.
The first picture is where I put a hand pump down and the soluiton dribbled out.
Wasn't spot cleaning but you'll get the idea.

This picture is where I had to reverse the "new" stain that was created by the acid I was using, in this case it was citric.

Roger,

Thanks for those pictures!.

What type alkaline solution or chemical did you use to get rid of the stain?
