setting up driveway cleaning
« on: November 02, 2007, 12:33:17 pm »
Has anyone got any tips for purchasing the best equipment for driveway cleaning in the Liverpool area. The kind of advice i need is the best generator/washer to buy,the best size whirlaway cleaner etc,and the size of the water tank needed to go in the back of my van.I have been given 2 driveways by friends to start of and get some paid experience on that are approx 100 feet long and 50 feet wide. The money off this will go towards my equipment, they understand i am on a learning curve and it will be a bit hit and miss to start,i have done my own drive with a normal jet and lance then resanded etc and got great results so i know the basics.i am semi retired and only setting it up as a sideline to keep me active,i am not going to earn fortunes i know but every bit helps and i can`t see any one else doing it in my area, when people are doing it the mess is terrible and they never re-sand ,i`m going to do a few cheap demo jobs to get the word going and sign my van out advertise etc.Any advice will do.Lastly whats the going rate and how long do you think these first 2 drives will take?thanks dan

Hi Dan,

I think I can possibly help you out with the purchase
of equipment. We are Merrill Fox enterprises and have
sent numerous amounts of pressure washers, whirl-a-ways
and related accessories to the UK at great prices. Please email
us at fox@merrillfoxenterprises.com with your equipment needs
and I can get you a price quote including freight as long as you include your address with postal code.

Hi

Probably the worst time to be setting up to be honest.
Pressure washing is traditionally slow over the winter months (domestic work at least).
If you are getting ready for the spring season then no problem, but don't go quitting your job before Feb/March.

Merrill is certainly one of the guys to speak to regarding good quality kit and advice.

Cheers

Andy

Hello, I would start setting up now if I were you for various reasons:-
any equipment you buy s/h now will be cheaper and you need to be in no hurry so you can find the bargains
Advertising needs to be planned ahead
you need to know how to actually work the gear so you can talk friends and family into letting you loose on their drives and patios
winter will soon be over and spring will sneak up on you and you will be unprepared

Dandan this might help,
What you are looking for is reliablity.
The Pressure Washer
If you go with a petrol engine then Honda has to be the best really.
13hp machine is a work-horse and will run all day for you. Also petrol engines are usually cheaper and lighter then diesel.
Pump
Interpump or CAT both tried and tested. You want about 15 litres of water per minute, anything less can be a struggle. PSI around 3000 or better, you can always turn pressure down, not up.
Flat Surface Cleaner
Choice of three really, Whril-away, Tech-clean, Mosmatic.
Lances/wands
If you have a US style lance with various tips/nozzels you pretty much have anythnig covered, just add a turbo nozzle.
I prefer, a dual lance and a seperate turbo lance myself.
High Pressure Hose
Most set-ups come with a 10 metre hose as starters, but well worth adding a 20 metre hose, with Q/C connetors to have a total of 30 metres.

You will also need a holding tank of some sort to supply the washer with water. Most pro set-ups draw/suck water.
Hoses to fill and supply tank/washer from water supply.

That's pretty much the basics.
Once you have started you will always find something to add/aid  your work load, but the above is pretty much what you need to get started.

Good luck......go for it.

the lads are right dan its not a good time of year at all to start as hardly any domestic customers have it done until the spring, you could end up buying the gear and doing your friends driveways and then not getting any other work till march april and its not cheap to buy. i know from experience, sometimes in the past i have had no work from august throughht till march which is scary when you have to pay the bills and christmas is inbetween.  start in march then try to get a load of work in and then see.  its too risky at the moment.
